That still doesn't change the fact of map size. Maps on Far Cry averaged 7-12mb, and could hit 20.

Now, depending on your internet connection, this took between 5 seconds and 3 minutes.

Let's not forget that if someone in the game didn't have the map, the lobby had to wait. The entire lobby.

Now, let's think about it. If Forge exists, there'll probably be forge maps in Matchmaking at some point, it would be idiotic to think otherwise. Now, do you seriously think you'd enjoy it if every couple of games you had to wait roughly 3 minutes in the lobby for some new player to download the maps? And that's assuming the map size was limited in MM to about 10mb.

In customs in Far Cry, the bigger maps hit 20mb. That's between 5 seconds and 5 minutes (I've played with dudes that have taken longer to download a map). You seriously want that gap between games?

To be honest, I think that waiting was one of the things that killed Far Cry 2, because all together, it wasn't a bad game.

The current forge system, where all the maps are tiny because the objects are all pre-loaded is perfect. Download a map takes milliseconds, and it's done in the lobby before the game starts, and no one notices it.

If they can find a way to expand on that without introducing enormous file sizes, it'll be great.

Not to mention that if we're making new maps with such a size and hosting them on a fileshare, that's gotta be SOME sort of server side tension, no?

Lol at six more blocks, I trully think that people are just bashing Halo 4 because they didnt get exactly what they wanted and hate the game because of it. You can't know until they show of all the forge blocks, all the new weapons, maps, classes, gametypes and all that other stuff, but to me I think I will enjoy this game.

It would be cool to have our own terrain editor that we could save and essentially create your own forge world where you can make your own maps on it

Good god those armor models are hideous. Outside of that, no complaints.

Lol. Simple solution to people waiting on map DLs is the same system we have now... Players who don't have the maps don't have the option to play the maps when the game is setting up. Those who do have the maps (full lobby) have the option to vote on them.

When the maps are placed into the matchmaking hoppers, a pop up comes up on player consoles advising them of free DLC for matchmaking and it's their choice if they want to download them.

    Problem solved.

I actually agree with stevo....... What.. the........****.

After watching the podcast, idk some things are interesting but I'll have to see. I'm back to being worried about the weapon drops again, the first 5 mins of that podcast are brutal. I need to listen to it again before leaving a proper opinion lol

Haha the screen showed the podcast was 40 minutes long but it just repeated every 12 minutes
I wonder what the "mystery game type" will be like

Sounds simple, in actuality, it isn't. That violates a lot of usability issues. For one, seeing a message pop up asking me to download a map everytime I wanted to join a custom game or a matchmaking game on a forge map would get annoying really fast. Second, you can't just tell people to delete stuff or buy a bigger HD. Always assume your consumers either have no money or never have a lot of money (because in a lot of cases, that is true) so telling your user base to dedicate a significant portion of their harddrive just to one game or to buy a bigger HD is asking a lot.

While we are a little spoiled in a forum called forgehub with quality maps and great forgers, a lot of people liked Halo 3 and Halo Reach forge because of its easy learning curve. A full map editor no matter how intuitive you make it comes with a tougher learning curve. The more control you give the user the more possibilities and combinations are created. All those combinations can quickly overwhelm your user base if careful attention isn't paid to helping them through it. Having a great menu system would help alleviate some of the trouble but a robust editor is still a daunting proposition to a lot of people.

I would love having a lot more capabilities within forge but thinking a full map editor on the same level as some PC game editors or Far Cry as a simple matter is misrepresenting the process.

How about in the preferences options you can decide whether or not to pull up custom maps.
    Problem solved.

And clearly the mystery gametype is clue. Lol

I think they need to make a simple change to the textures on the models and make them a bit darker looking. The backgrounds look a bit dark and realistic while the spartans look too bright for their environment, IMO. They look good, they just need a tiny change in the way that their armor interacts with light.

Also, do you think Invasion will return and just have it be Spartans vs Spartans? I think that would be a pretty good implementation.

No it's gonna be spartans v. whatever the new enemy is.

Also what is the story behind some of the multiplayer features such as AA's returning. Or the dmr when it should have been lost on Reach. So how could they make multiplayer have a story if it is not the whole story?

I loved the idea of invasion, but I didn't think it was quite there. I'd like to see it return, but implemented better.

I was being a bit facetious, don't get all worked up on me. All I'm saying is that daydreaming about a fully-featured map editor is sure to result in disappointment. Forge 2.0 was a strong improvement on the original forge, but it's still what it is: an object editor where you choose from a limited palette and move those objects around on an existing map. If forge 3.0 evolves significantly beyond that, I'll be surprised, because 343's development cycle to make this game wasn't that long, and they don't have much incentive to put in such a radically new feature.

    Edited by merge:

Great point, one which I agree with. It's not just filesizes driving the simplicity of forge. In a sense, forge is aimed at casual mapmakers the same way a lot of multiplayer design decisions are aimed at casual FPS players. This is a big game with broad appeal and they want it to be simple and user-friendly.

I rather enjoyed invasion and that's assuming that you will be able to play as the new enemy's in multiplayer I doubt it I think if invasion returns(hopeful)it will be spartans vs. Spartans.

I actually don't like the current system, unfortunately. The end result has been seldom getting to play maps I paid for. Some of the DLC maps I've played maybe three or four times total. I probably could have spent more time in the DLC playlists, but they were inadequate for various reasons that I doubt I need to explain.

One advantage of what you're suggesting is that all such maps would be free. People might be more prone to download them. On the other side of the coin, a lot of people are impatient and might not bother, which puts us in the same place we are with DLC in Reach: it would heavily under-utilized.

It also wouldn't help with custom games, which I guess would be stuck with download times any time a new map is played - that's pretty much unavoidable.

First off, I dont even think we know if invasion is even in. Second, the whole reason there isn't elites isnt so that they can bring in a new race to play as. It's because they want to stick with the whole infinity thing and matchmaking being a training ground type thing for Spartans. With this fiction they are trying to stick with, it's a good bet you will only be able to be a Spartan in multiplayer.

All this being said, some Spartan ops missions could be very invasion-like(maybe even replacing it completely) and that would most likely be against AIs of the new enemy or elites or whoever the hell we are fighting
