OMG WHO THE HELL CARES! - YouTube

Seriously though, who cares. We kill them by the hundreds, does it matter at all how they sound or look. That grunt is also being blown up so hardly the best angle or situation to judge a character model.

Also...wat? A grunt is a low throaty sound, not a squeak. By that logic they should have been named Squeaks if you think the name has anything to do with the sounds they make.

Lol... typically the covenant names are rank associated to determine their level of skill... I.e. grunt is basically the lacky, recruit, cannon fodder. Elites are skilled and should be thought about before engaging. Commanders lead squads of other units. Chieftans etc... etc...

The only exception I can think of that doesn't go with this trend is the Jackal...

    Eh..

Eh.... I think the string part going up and down chromatically is too simple, and too overdone. The score for me is actually a tad too simple. It's lots of little bits. I mean, the rhythm and notes used sound likes its being imporivsed by somebody who has played an instrument for a couple of months. It's just up and down and up and down, all chromatically. For example, after one phrase of it the part could have gone up a 5th and then dimminuendod back out, with a bit more focus on harmonisation. Harmonising is what makes such bone chilling music, and that piece didn't have it.

It isn't bad, but I can't say im sold on it.

    Compare it to this

    :O

See the harmonising in it, with just a tad little bit behind it?

Pac, by that regard all the enemies may aswell be blocks. Heck, why even make a skybox, its just an object. Why spend time making the character of master chief, hes just a box you never see. Who cares! Why bother about the music, the game still works without it.

What is the point in even having art if you arn't allowed to have a positive or negative opinion on it? Why do people have voice acting? Why do we not just do text to speech? Honestly pac, whatever I post you do whatever you can to try and call me out on it as a way to make yourself try and look good. Get off my back.

Wow, get more worked up over nothing. Geez. Pac and Stevo are absolutely right here. Not only did what you say about grunts make no sense at all, but when Pac makes a valid point you try and just shut it down.

Also, final warning regarding pictures and videos. Keep everything civil. And if you think Halo is dead, go elsewhere. We have enough pages of people whining. If you want to talk about another game, go to the thread for said game.

That music sample reminds me of music that could only ever be menu music. There's simply too much going on at the same time for it to be something you could enjoy killing people to.

It is very dramatic and has a build up to something, but it reminds me too much of the music on Starcraft II's menu screen to ever be something worth including in the game... unless it's over the top of a cutscene....

    Woah, hold up now.

What you're necessarily saying is that enemy design doesn't matter, because we're killing them. Of course it's important, it's part of the game design. Pac saying that it didn't matter because we were killing them WASN'T a valid point, it was a bad one.

And Oli was right, you're necessarily saying we could be fighting white blobs with the same level of atmosphere. He didn't try and shut it down, but he could've been less aggressive.

Agreed with Neo and Oli (on that specific point), good design on an enemy you'll be fighting many, many times is a key part of the development. I've never cared too much personally because I pretty much play the campaign once for the story and then never touch it again, but even I at least want that one experience to be immersive.

Back on topic guys. I think this was all a misunderstanding....

Pac was trying to say that it doesn't matter about what grunt's are named and the sound they produce, because the sounds are irrelevant (when you're looking at the name of the unit). The looks being irrelevant were related to this picture in particular because the model is not in a state where you would usually find the unit. Nibbs was trying to back this up.

My point was simply clarifying the naming of the units and their connection being rank related, not sound related.

I think both Oli and Neo have misunderstood what is being argued against here, as unit design and appearance is very necessary in a game where you spend 90% of the time looking at them. However, an early look at a specific action in progress on a character model that isn't yet 100% is kind of irrelevant at this stage, but very much so matters nearer release date.

At least, these are the points I got from this discussion........

    I argued specifically against this:
But that's irrelevant. You're right, we can't say an awful lot because it's at an early stage, but what do you expect people to do? Not discuss something because it isn't definite yet?
And look back at something like Reach concept art and the early renders of the grunts we saw, they came out months before released and never changed.

Still, you can't block discussion based off the fact that it isn't final.

To me, that seems to say "who cares how they look, why are you being stupid enough to discuss a character model when the character model doesn't matter." Just in a more succinct way :D And what you are saying about the angle means squat. Less than squat really. You can see the shape of the head, and the lack of armour. I am stating that I dislike the exact same thing. All you can say in that defence is the stance of it as far as angles are concerned. When they are all alive and stuff. I doubt that the model will change when it dies.

Can I not give an opinion on that because he is seen from the side?

And yes, that really seems too menu music like for me. For menu music its nice.

I'm neither defending the point or arguing against it... I'm just saying I think things are taken a little too literally on the point of him saying does it matter.

I was more so involved in the discussion because I stated how the grunts are named. lol

Holy **** there was a lot of misinterpretation. At no point did I say character models don't matter. Putting words in my mouth much. My comment was about Oli complaining about the grunt in the picture. My point was whether the grunt looks like it does in the picture (and like I said, the grunt was being blown up so hardly the best image to judge a character model on) or some other variation of the classic grunt model, it us not a big deal nor a significant difference. A grunt is not Master Chief, people should have no emotional investment into the model of an enemy you kill thousands of times and are not story critical. If you do have an emotional investment to a specific grunt model (and there has been a different model in every halo game) then maybe you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

My point regarding the sound is that Oli incorrectly made the connection (even if it was in jest) that making the grunts sounds lower would go against their name. My point was a grunt is not a squeak, the words are not synonyms. Canon says the name grunt came from the UNSC who observed they did the "grunt" work for the covenant.

From a design standpoint grunts have always been kind of stupid-looking, fitting to their footstool standing in the ranks of enemies. I don't really care if they continue to be stupid-looking.

I also don't care if the character model has armor everywhere it realistically would or should. "Realistically," the canopy on a scorpion wouldn't allow you to snipe the driver right out of it, but that was put into the very first Halo game for gameplay reasons. This is even less meaningful than that - it's purely cosmetic. As long as grunts aren't naked fat dudes with clown faces, I'll be fine with them, more than likely. I just want to fit into the universe of the game visually, and function properly from a gameplay standpoint.

Nicely put. My opinion is invalid and whatever you think is automatically correct therefore because it is a finer detail. Cheers for clearing that up then.

This isn't the place for it.

I think the fact that they have less armour is pretty fitting. After the war and all, having inferior equipment, or something that looks more ragged and rough is pretty cool. I really like it, kinda like the picture of the red elite in the magazine scans.

Moving back along to the Elites...
I think that the savage look suits them, considering the circumstances. Who knows, maybe some have become feral, while the rest have gone back to their structured militaristic ways.

Well said. Guys, stop scrapping. If you really must argue over semantics then please take it elsewhere (hint: reported posts is not that place). And yes I do realise how funny it is that I'm saying this of all people.
