Welcome to the Halo 4 Discussion thread.

People would, yes, but those people would do badly. I see people at least occasionally using ARs in games with DMR/AR starts, often on maps where the DMR is clearly superior (e.g. Zealot). I could actually see this being viable if they refined the AR in a manner I have suggested before - tight bullet spread to start, quickly expanding reticule/spread, and quick reset. If burst firing was appreciably better than full auto AND it actually gave the weapon an effective range of more than ten feet, then the AR would be a respectable weapon with an actual built-in skill gap.

Maybe certain gametypes will force you into choosing a weapon "class" that you have to start with and you choose from the selection. For example normal TS would force you to choose some sort of weapon that functions along the lines of the AR, like the Plasma Repeater and the Spiker. Others would force you to start with the DMR/BR/NR etc.

Just a bit of a guess, but it would help balance the weapon starts a little more.

Battlefield 3. It's basically what Halo 4 is shaping up to be, but on a bigger scale.

    Ouch.

I'll have to be beaten with a stick to stop playing Halo games. But if Halo 4 isn't at least as fun as Reach, I'll probably be spending a lot more time with GTA V - they come out around the same time and I have played every single GTA game since 3 half to death. On a similar note, Rockstar can announce the next Red Dead game any ol' time now... I need more horse-ridin' and slow motion shootouts in my life.

Other shooters? Sadly, the only one I've ever really loved is Halo. CoD campaign is fun but multiplayer leaves me cold.

Why would I play CoD if I could just play Halo 4?

    Good point.

I'm currently discussing the changes being made with some guys I used to play with and they seem excited about them!?

This is something that a lot of people here have a hard time coping with: the vast majority of Halo players are not hardcore competitive types, and not only that, they don't even TALK TO hardcore competitive types. They couldn't articulate the difference between the old Halo model (pick-up shooter) and the new one starting with Reach (loadout shooter) or tell you why one is inherently balanced and the other is not. (Italics for emphasis - that word "inherently" is key, before anybody starts going off on me.) If you start talking about map flow and optimal power weapon placements and all that kind of crap, their eyes will glaze over. You know what they do understand though? Jetpacks are cool and fun. Ranking up is fun. Buying new weapons and armor is fun.

That's what 343 is dealing with/catering to, just like Bungie when they developed Reach. Like it or not, they are not primarily trying to make a game for perfect competitive play - that is, at best, a secondary consideration. They're trying to make a game that will sell at launch and keep people playing so they can sell DLC and other stuff later, and will keep players invested so they come back for Halo 5. They would love to make 100% of players happy, but barring that, they are much more interested in the 90% that likes jetpacks than the 10% that hates them.

tbh, I doubt there is anybody here who hasn't once gone into a casual playlist. I mean, hockey on halo is so frigging awesome.

That being said, if casual players seem more than content wit casual playlist, one does have to wonder why they are being encouraged so deeply into a slayer objective playlist they will so dearly hate and shortly abandon on the basis that they are casuals, and slayer etc is too difficult for them.

    I ****ing despise that statement.
Being casual doesn't mean they're bad. It doesn't mean they want "MARIO PARTY 10 HALO EDITION". It means they play the game for fun, and they rarely give a **** what they play, along with the fact that they don't play often.

They make up a majority of the player base, too. They aren't 6 year olds, they just don't play the game often.

I love some casual games - although honestly I hate hockey, at least the version of it in action sack. Boring with a side of stupid. I've played at least ten better (but similar) minigames.

Casual players are just fine with slayer. Slayer is the most popular default gametype in all shooter games because it reduces the thing to its basics: find the enemy and shoot them until they die. They don't want to play MLG slayer against pros, but they're perfectly happy killing each other. In fact most "casuals" are just fine with playing most competitive gametypes - but they're happier still if you give them a jetpack.

All the same, no matter how "fun" the settings are... A casual player will not be having fun if they get shat on in a 50-10 game of slayer... And that will happen fairly often unless we get a ranking/matching system that actually works.

I don't enjoy playing MM in Reach unless I've got a party of 4, and you know what happens when I do go in with one? Kids get shat on hard. They get shat on so hard they either start rage quiting, or cry a freaking river in the post game lobby. Thankfully some actually take it in turn and give a GG, that thats rare in gaming these days...
