First off, with the nuke...no...just no.

If the glass is half full the entire time, you get 343 catering to the casuals that back up gameplay mechanics with arguments as insightful as, "DURRHURR ADAPT" because they have no vision or knowledge when it comes to competitive gameplay and appear to be the majority of critics.

So sorry if I'm being a nark, but I'd rather be skeptical than a blind fanboy that falls in love with every aspect of the game until it hits the release date before I can gain the ability to compile a basic opinion and then include myself with the bandwagon that is lined up with pitchforks demanding a title update even later in the future because 343 received no negative criticisms before H4 was released.

Yes, but g4 attended the microsoft spring showcase of halo 4 and they quoted 343i in an article that single player and multiplayer are tied together.

Armor abilities as they are in Reach suck, but they're still better than a level-based perk system. At least with armor abilities everyone has the same selection of abilities at the beginning of each game.

But I guess "perks" won't be that big of a deal, so I'm just going to wait for more info.

To all of you complaining about things in the trailer:

I'm completely 'meh' about this game ... maybe that will change, but to be honest there is no cool driving force to make me want to play. Sure its Master Chief, but big woop I played as him for 3 games, what can you bring to the table thats new? Ooooo the BR. ¬_¬

Halo 2 and 3 were worthy of my excitement for the story and Reach for Forge (and the fact you experienced the fall of Reach).

With this, it just feels like it will be more of the same.

Nice screens, so merged with the H4 thread. Please can people stick to this Gaming Discussion thread and refrain from posting about H4 in Reach Discussion.

Thing is, it does. Sorry, but it just does. If your opponent is slightly, not massively but noticeably, better than you, but you have a higher level gun, then you can (and often will) win an encounter despite the skills you displayed in that instant being worse.

Sure it's not gonna help someone who's just picked up the game dump all over a vet, but if the differences that levelled items bring are nonexistent, why would they exist at all? Having an advantage off the bat, even if it doesn't bridge huge skill gaps, is the entire purpose of levelled items.

Uh... the main thing that hurt Reach as a game and diminished its active playing population?

You're not going to win over the anti-perks crowd by appealing to the least-liked facet of Reach and the possible direct precedent for whatever this perks thing is.

Interesting. The plot thickens. Wish they'd just make a statement, even a sort of vague one, about whatever it is they're planning to do; this has turned into a minor feeding frenzy.

Uhhh, to have something to unlock that has the modicum of value? Who ever said the difference between levelled items was non-existent. At most it would be trivial.

I will reiterate: you know nothing about any gameplay unlock/ reward system in Halo 4, but you (as in all of you in general) are already bitching about how bad it will be. Like a little girl. In a little dress. Little saddle shoes. Little pigtails.

    That's your problem right there.

It's a lot easier to argue any point of view when you assume everyone that disagrees with you all think exactly the same way.

Anyone who is saying "perks are going to be bad" knows nothing about Halo 4's customisation features and those many are equally uninformed and equal ignorant.

Everyone except people privy to the actual information is ignorant at this point.
All we are doing is speculating, and I am speculating based on a system similar to COD's perk system to which I despise.

If it were anything like that I would be highly disappointed. Not saying I believe it will be like what I have already seen, but through empirical knowledge of how most leveled perk systems work I know I do not like them especially in a competitive multiplayer environment.

You apparently don't remember Halo: Reach with its bloom and it's armor abilities. It doesn't matter how little of difference these things make, if they make any difference at all it won't be Halo..which was the exact problem Reach had. It's been 5 years since we had a game that was actually "Halo". It's time for a rehash.

OK, well put it like this:

I see the central appeal of Halo as a shooter being the fact that everyone starts each game on a level playing field (not different options which are balanced, a totally level playing field), and any difference within games is gained and worked for within that game. I don't see how, if that's still true, terms like "perks" or "customisation that affects gameplay" are even mildly applicable, no matter how ill chosen.

How can anyone, even with infinite optimism, see a way in which gameplay-affecting-customisation and an even playing field can coexist?

    No.

I've put this as plainly and politely as possible in this thread already, but let's do it once more with feeling. Halos 1-3 were pick-up shooters. There were no perks, no loadouts, no way to differentiate players prior to spawn (except in the rare gametype like VIP). The philosophy of the game was you all start with the same base traits and weapons, and you go acquire anything else you want to use by finding it on the map. Halo: Reach introduced a new philosophy via armor abilities, and Halo 4 may (or may not, we don't entirely know yet) be pushing that further via something like COD's perks.

Now: whether you like this or not (or if you don't care at all), whether you loved armor abilities or hated them, whether you think something like this can be balanced and lead to a good and interesting game... you have to admit that the philosophies at work here are totally different. Yes? Being able to spawn with, say, a sniper rifle and camo is a massively different thing from being able to go fight for and obtain a sniper rifle or a camo power-up or AA pickup. Even if that camo + sniper loadout is painstakingly balanced so as not to overwhelm the sandbox, you're still playing a kind of rock-paper-scissors with how you choose to spawn.

Halo used to be a game without a class system; it's increasingly something different. That's the point.

Some people object to that in principle because they like the philosophy of Halos 1-3. They like pickup shooters. They may not even think the classes (or whatever they are) are inherently unbalanced in any way; they may simply prefer a class-free game where everyone is forced to be on equal footing at the start of the game. And when you say they are "equally ignorant" to someone just mindlessly kvetching, you're doing a huge disservice to basic intellectualism. You're essentially saying we can't discuss the fundamental mechanics of shooters because we haven't played every last possible iteration of the shooter game to see how they all behave. You're declaring off-limits the kind of high-level discussion that undoubtedly goes on in game studios every time a new game is made. Why?

I grant you that Halo 4 perks might be well-balanced. They might be subtle. They might barely impact the game. There might be playlists that let you play "straight" Halo with no loadouts, perks or classes. MLG may end up loving the perks so much that they end up using them. Who knows? There is a lot that is yet unknown. But this is what is known: unless the slim info about "perks" given so far is a complete mischaracterization of something entirely different from anything known to shooter-dom thus far, Halo 4 is going to continue a philosophy change that started with Reach. It's not going to be purely a pickup shooter like Halos 1-3. And yes, on paper, without having experience whatever they have in store for us, I am concerned about that. I don't think it's the right direction for the series, if that's what they're doing. Let the other major players in the FPS market do their classes and loadouts; I'd prefer Halo to find another way forward. And frankly, I hope that they are, and the word "perks" is an enormous mislead.

So the continuation of the same story excited you but the prospect of an entirely new story with new enemies and new locations (not just Earth or a Halo) doesn't excite you in the slightest?

This is the first post after that "first look" came out actually complaining about "more of the same" lol. Every post around you is complaining about how different it will be.

And all good points nutduster, as I said I was defending the developers and their creative decisions not specifically Halo. Just hate all the "doom and gloom" posts about something people barely know. Its one thing for that kind of discussion after the fact when the game's been played and measured for its worth as a game but before hand it really just saps all the fun out of the experience.

If they had something as simple as a utitity that increases acceleration by a couple percent or something that would be 1 thing, but class creation is an entirely huge mistake.
But to get off topic, I'd like to say that a bigger capability in armor customization would be great. I also miss hayabusa armor :(

Thanks Pac, wanted to ask that question myself. I'm actually more excited by the campaign portion of Halo 4 than any of the post-CE games. Halo 2 and 3 were a little underwhelming in some of the Earth portions, and felt overly familiar elsewhere (especially in re-using the flood, and the escalating scarab setpieces). Reach's campaign is actually a bit undervalued in breaking some legit new ground, IMO - the downer ending is for my money far superior to the stupid boss fight than ended 2, or the CE-recycling at the end of 3. And the space battles were something brand new that felt like a completely different (but cool) game set in the same universe. I don't really know what all is planned for Halo 4, but at least on paper, the prospect of going somewhere really NEW sounds promising to me. I hope they took advantage of the opportunity to really shake things up. After 5 games (including ODST) I'm actually a bit bored of killing grunts - give me some weirdo forerunner ****, please.

Let me put it like this: Things change.

If you though that Halo 6 was going to be Halo: CE with different vehicles and weapons, your lack of imagination is soul-crushing.

It's a stupid question, so let me respond to another.

Do you even need to ask?

    Edit: Flipp*ant is censored? What?
