Imagine if I believed I was the most talented piano player and composer of all time, and I could write and play the most beautiful music to ever exist if only I tried, and if you asked me why I thought that I said "imagining the applause of the audience after I had just played gives my life meaning". The fact that it would be nice if something were true is not a reason to believe that it is true. That's why there are words like wishful thinking, self-deception and delusion.

    Sam Harris ladies and gentlemen.

Sam Harris: What are your crazy reasons for believing a god? - YouTube

No-one's saying it has to be your belief, and I couldn't care less if you feel indignant because evidence disproves what you believe and you have absolutely no intelligent reason to keep the wool where it is. I like debating religion, and you have no reason to debate whether or not I should debate religion unless of course seeing how flawed your beliefs are makes you question them.

Because there's not a mote of evidence that it's true.

I believe in determinism, not free will, which sadly means I can't choose whether or not I look down on you. Alien experiment? Just appeared one day? That sounds ridiculous. It's not like there's a big man in the sk-

Okay Transhuman, I wasnt saying the alien thing, and the appearing thing as if they are ridiculous. I am saying believe waht you want and so will I. I will tell you this, if an imaginary applause in your head made you feel good, play that piano bro. You guys all believe in something entirely different and I dont like like you any less or more for it. Thats the point I am trying to make here. And you are correct, no one is saying I have to believe this, but I choose to never the less. You are free to debate religion all you want so I will take beck that one comment, but that gives you no right to belittle a Christian because he believes in a God. Your entire post talks down on me like I am an idiot. Its one thing to debate a topic, its another to bash the person on the other end of your arguments. Also, regardless of evidence proving what, NOBODY know how we were created (scientifically) for sure yet. No matter how close we think we are, its all theory still.

BTW Matty, on the raising a child thing, I was not raised a Christian. I knew about it but was never forced to go to church or avoid anything that would "Corrupt" me. I used to get high with my parents, lol. I found this on my own terms and didnt become a Christian until a few years ago when I was 20. So your concept doesnt play out the way you might think. Look at the number of people in this thread who admitted their parents were Christian and they ended up not following.

Uhhh... to be totally honest, I haven't... I've met knowledgable Christians and chill Christians, but none that are both. These guys gave me a pamphlet about how I was going to hell and a water bottle, which I suppose is chill in a way considering it was a laugh and free water all in one...

I'm a Christian, and I'm not even remotely upset about the atheists on this board. Atheists are the most close-minded group of people you will ever meet in your life, and more importantly they completely ignore and dismiss any evidence pointed against them without consideration and selectively choose which "evidence" to actually pay attention to.

However, I'm extremely upset with other Christians on this board. Go read up on the topic of creation yourself and you'll find the bible is completely consistent with modern science. You know, actual modern science, not the assumption-based "theories" such as Evolution or Carbon Dating.

Carbon dating is about as much science as it gets. It's technically a theory, because it's TECHNICALLY not provable. But, if you're getting the same answer 1,000,000 times out of 1,000,000 attempts...there's reason to suggest that it might just be kindaaaaa right, just as EVERY OTHER PART OF SCIENCE THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED. We're talking about carbon atoms and matching their decay exponentially, and if you've decided that God just made it like that so that it doesn't follow the laws of math and science...well, uh....you're wrong. Sorry, it's that simple, I can't even respect an opinion that says carbon dating isn't science.

In the end it really depends on who taught you about evolution and carbon dating - if it was a college professor, I'm sure you'll be pretty convinced. If it was your parents, church, or private school...well, those facts are pretty warped, sorry to say. You can't accept half of science and deny other parts of it. Evolution is a theory more than carbon dating - it's a damn good theory, but as of yet not PERFECT.

Thanks again for all the high five returns, figs are fruits too.

Go read up on the whole thread to see my thoughts on Religion. My previous post in particular. You know, the one where I say I'm an atheist but still listen without passing my own judgement. The one that implies I am pretty open-minded. I am open-minded but it has to make sense for me. If "God" was really so powerful, why would he leave a book open for such interpretation? **** off.

Although I am indecisive, it does not mean I would ever worship said "God." I would much rather go to Hell, and be tortured, beaten, burned, shackled, and what have you then to be in the presence of such a being who refuses to help but insists on punishing people for something we have not done. If abortions are frowned upon, why do women have miscarriages? Did everybody in New Orleans deserve to lose their house? I could go on and on about the hypocrisies which led me to become an atheist but it wouldn't be worth anybody's time. If a God does exist, I'll gladly not see him.

You say you're not even "remotely upset" about the atheists on this board, and then you post a false generalization. Good job.

Okay this is going better than expected. I just want to say to all the people that do not believe in a God. Because you don't believe in a God why is it when you get mad you say "Oh my God"

    Discuss.

i say 'god' and 'jesus christ' in vain all the time. i like to surround them with '****'s and '****'s among other words to make it extra offensive. i dont believe any of it, there's no penalty. it's no different than quoting blasphemous phrases from other works of fiction.

for example, all of those are on par and replaceable with "frakking gods dammit" or "GODSDAMN LORDS OF KOBOL"
