That's not a completely accurate description of the process, but why is it that hard to believe? Those electrical impulses are motivated by chemical processes involving (among other things) fluctuating ion concentrations across neuronal cell membranes and the cycling of neurotransmitters across the synapses between neurons. These mechanisms require a great deal of energy (nearly 20% of the body's total consumption), and upon death they they starve and cease to function. Action potentials stop and ions are free to slowly diffuse back across cell membranes, gaining entropy and losing energy as heat, mostly. The electrochemical impulses themselves aren't preserved, it's only the latent chemical energy in the fats and proteins in our cells that actually gets buried and turned into worm food.
I don't believe in any religion not even atheists or anything. No real feelings one way or the other. But I find the physiology of people who believe in religion interesting as in anyone who believes something that i myself think is incorrect. (like some women logic i find interesting because there is reasoning behind it i just can't comprehend it) But when I've been really down in the dumps I've prayed a few times(To a christian god most likely because I have some christian friends), So i dunno what that means. "Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in"-Script.
@Matty and Pac Maybe you guys could move that debate to another thread? It's definitely an interesting read and I by no means want to stifle it, however it's slightly off the direct topic at hand and it's not entire fair to infringe on these guys' religious conversation.
Sure, it's more likely than being created by impossible deity 1, deity 2, or deity 3. Less likely than abiogenesis. X Files Theme Tune - YouTube
you do realize this response means absolutely nothing right? Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine when a third party (or in this case 4th party) interjects way after the fact and orders me to do something despite me either already have done it or in the process of doing it.
If you do choose to create a thread about evolution/religion/other theories, you can know that it will be well-moderated to keep out trolls. That way, this thread's purpose will be more emphasized and the other thread will recieve the friction which is currently going on in this thread.
He's coming to my university next month to talk about his new book, A Universe From Nothing; I'm really looking forward to it
I see no point in trying to take my side of the argument if it's not in response to someone with opposing views so it's up to them if they want to keep trying to defend religion. I'll gladly debate fairly.
Nope, no debating, this thread is for discussion about different religions. So please if you start debating do it some where else.
The fact is that atheism is innately incompatible with any religion at a fundamental level, and it is often a great pain for us to see people state, as fact, that which cannot be objectively verified, and justified only with the vaguest ideas at best, or misinformation or appeals to ignorance, authority or some other fallacious argument. To us, it is as annoying as people going up to you and telling you that your god doesn't exist, that you are silly to believe in it, and that you should change. Only for us, there would also be a gun pointed at you, saying do it or else, as we constantly are threatened with hell if we don't believe your gods. I am willing to have a normal discussion on religion, discussing points other than whether or not it is true, for instance you could discuss the variety of religions, how they seem to affect people etc, but when you try to assert them as fact, then how can we just go "oh well", especially seeing as you cannot either, given that when we come on and say our views we are told not to argue, and to take it out of the public square into the PMs?
How come everyone is now confronting slight conflict with fear being like "take it to the PM's", scared of the opinions of some of the gentlemen up there^ ? I'm a bit confused.
Yes, religion "discussion" is something that simply doesn't happen at least on a scale as large as the internet. Like I said in my first post, what did you expect to see? When people of different fundamental beliefs come together arguments will happen it is just human nature for one person to want to make others think as they do.
No that's religious nature. Atheism is principally about open-mindedness and objectivity. It's about how you think, not what you think.
