The more I think about it, the more I realize that Forgeworld is a terrible idea. Lets list the pros and cons: Honestly I had a hard time thinking of those. For the first point, I understand the potential that forgeworld offers in terms of giant maps, but to this date I have only seen one map to utilize this. Now lets see the cons: I'm sure there are more pros and cons that I can't think of right now. Here is my alternative: Forgeworld should be broken up into smaller maps, not consolidated into one big one. All of the sections of Forgeworld should be their own map, like Hemorrhage and the Colosseum. Each map should have its own aesthetic so as not to get boring. I don't know what would take up more disk space, having one giant map, or having a bunch of smaller ones, but it can't be that much of difference. Note: I am not raging at Bungie. I think they did a good thing trying something new. And forgeworld did seem like an awesome idea when the first made a vidoc about it, I just don't think it was a good idea, in retrospect. Now, tell me why I'm wrong.
Um I dont know if youve noticed but, NOT ALL MAPS ARE FREAKIN HUGE! Before you go on complaining, how about you check what you're whining about
You're wrong because your list of pros is ridiculously thin - I can think of a bunch more pros off the top of my head with little effort - and because Forge World has spawned a lot of good maps (though certainly it has some issues and those have manifested in a large number of bad maps, as well). At any rate, this is a go-nowhere conversation with Reach being as old as it is.
1: It IS organized...alphabetically 2: Oh wah. Sandbox was entirely tan and foundry was entirely green and grey and no one ever complained about that; there are still tons of creative things that people can do and have done aesthetically. 3: So? At least we have that space to begin with. To be honest, the fact that Forge World is the size of 5-7 separate maps is the pro that outweighs all of the cons.
The downside to splitting forge world into different spaces would be losing that interconnected space that forgers can use. It further limits our forging space and flexibility. The benefits would add a more diverse forge color pallet, and better frame rate. It's a toss up either way, I'd prefer a more diverse color pallet personally... as long as forge boundaries weren't too strict.
What do you think I'm whining about? Please share your pros and cons. I know my list was thin, tell me why you think its good/bad. Even if they are ordered alphabetically, it is still annoying to scroll through 20+ maps. I hated sandbox's aesthetic way more than I hated Forgeworld. People may have made it look good using clever geometry, but think of what they could do if they had more colors than blue and grey. Foundry on the other hand had a much more varied color pallet.
No matter what you're given in a game, there will always be people that will nitpick and complain. /leaves thread
Yeah, I think we all have to take into consideration what forge was before Reach. It's come leaps and bounds and I still love it to death. That being said, there is always room for improvement!
Pros: - You can build in a wide variety of places, including places that don't look like they were meant to be built in really, but people find a way. There's a lot of different geometrical features you can use - weird grassy slopes, rocks and trees in odd and isolated places, cliff faces overlooking the sea, etc. - You can incorporate wildly different pieces of scenery as a backdrop for your map. - You can build freaking enormous maps that would be impossible if Forge World were divided into chunks. I've played a number of these (like many of AD Records's campaign/invasion levels) and I made one myself (Grand Theft Mongoose). You can also build somewhat less enormous maps that combine interesting sections of Forge World, like a map that uses the cave tunnel and half of the canyon, or a map that uses the canyon and the plateau above and beside it, a map built in both the coliseum and the quarry with elevators and chutes between the two, etc. Again, if you divide all of this off from each other, it becomes impossible. As for the cons, I am familiar with the usual complaints (framerate, all looks kind of similar) but will say that I feel most of them are overstated. In my mind the biggest issues with Reach forging have to do solely with the object palette and not the huge, fairly diverse area we have to build in.
I agree...If forge world was broken into smaller maps (maybe just three) then it wouldn't be overloaded and bungie wouldn't have had to delete stuff from it before release, also each map could have its own set of objects.
And thousands of ideas would not have been able to be pulled off. Maps that use a huge environment to make a gametype that deals with travelling or giant structures would be impossible.
I have 200+ Forge World maps, and it takes 30 seconds at most to find what I'm looking for. Is it really such a problem?
I dont see a point in this thread. Forge World is a wonderful creation for us forgers, why slam it? Bungie developed Forge so much farther than the little tinkering with pre-made maps it once was in Halo 3. Sure you could make completely new maps, but you had to have extreme patience and actually know all the tricks to get pieces how you wanted. In forge world we not only have a new interface but a whole area the size of 6 maps to create epic areas to play in be it a small 2v2 map, a large BTB flag map, or a race track that takes you all across the world. Sure, I wish there were some changes like snow, desert, and changeable textures, but thats not the case and that's how it always will be in Reach. If you want to make Suggestions for a forge in Halo 4 or any other upcoming halo game make a point of it in the official thread for new ideas for a second forge world, im sure there is one floating around here somewhere. Forge world doesnt suck, forge world just is forge world, accept it or dont forge there.
It's called the right trigger, bro. Also, which is more of a pain when loading a map: scrolling for about ten seconds in the forgeworld list, or having to back out of the list, select another base map, go into the list again, scroll for about ten seconds, and then wait a minute for the map to load? I'd wager that only having to load a map once far outweighs the inconvenience of having a long list. Although if you're bitching about having only 20 maps, I guess there's not much point. Do you really just want to fly a falcon through an empty warehouse?
Aw man, gotta hate dem' white people problems. Really, what do you expect, it's a menu, not a filing cabinet. Is it law that I most use more than half of Forge World? Seriously, it's huge. And a bigger Forge world is necessary because there's something called "options". All I really ask of Forge world is a larger flat grass area. The Canyon has more bumps and curves than a women and the Query is to small sometimes.
