What about a template contest? Someone could make a predetermined template and the entrants in the contest could make any map they desire as long as they use the template (and not remove any pieces)?

Also, I'd be interested in offering some small prizes if this ever picks up.

FH had a Template Contest once upon a time too.
We already rehashed one Halo 3 contest for Reach, I don't see why we don't do them all again.

I really like that template idea/"build around this." Seems like it'd be a lot of fun. Also, let's keep the arguing to a minimum here. This is just a place to post ideas and let the staff know what kind of interest the public has in map competitions, not to debate what constitutes a good or bad map.

This is a good idea, I would definately enter an Invasion or Star Wars map contest. Maybe we could do a remake contest from past Halo games?

We need the return of two things
    1. Lazy map makers comp was great fun to do and didnt take much time so there was always lots of entrants
    2. Template contest. WHY HAS THIS NOT YET BEEN DONE ON REACH!

There are honestly some great ideas here for new and unique projects, that definately interest me as well. My current project actually is using quite a few of the ideas mentioned. It is however quite a reimagination of a previous halo map recreated with a temple/palace theme while keeping and improving gameplay aspects for reach, think AA's etc.
I myself would love a contest where you take a map from the past, campaign, firefight, multiplayer, and use your own idea's and theme for it and essentially make it your own different from the everyday straight from the game remakes. This would remedy alot of that remake angst that is seen and seeing for myself what most forgers are capable of it would really be something :).

How about a "map/level remake of any bungie game ever"? it could include Myth, Minotaur: Labyrinths of Crete, Marathon 1,2, and Infinity, Pathways into Darkness, Oni, and all of the Halo games. Just remake multiplayer maps or, for the games without multiplayer (Pathways etc.), Remake a level from the game, but put a Reach twist on it.

I like budget and object-limit type of contests (though I have yet to enter one - usually working on something else already). I don't know about single objects though, I think that's a bit too limiting. I proposed before a contest where you can pick any two structure objects and use as many of those as you want, but no others; I also like the idea of a single category (only blocks, only walls, only rocks) or a specific object set (e.g. the block tall & thin, the rock flat, the corner 4x4... whatever, maybe 3-4 select pieces).

Here's an idea I don't think I've seen proposed: a contest based on a location. And it has to be a weird one - no quarry, coliseum, or canyon. Maybe set in the cave or on the island.

Another idea: a contest where you take an existing map (e.g. Asylum) and make a map by completely re-arranging its pieces. You can't add any new ones, just re-use the existing ones.

A map that supports an unusual gametype maybe? Like 10 player FFA, or 4 team neutral assault (Can you even do that?)

I really like those ideas, especially the second one. I also haven't seen any good maps be made in the cave, so that would be interesting. I feel it has a lot of potential, but no one wants to really do the proper planning it would take to make sure it works right.

I always take the time to make sure each of my maps work right.

I support Gametype Support Contests (KotH, anyone?), Campaign Remakes, and Canvas Contests (bulid in or around existing geography or pieces. I have pyramid, cube, and sphere canvasses(sp?)

I just mean in the cave. It's difficult to create multiple paths that flow well due to the restrictions it presents. I think I've seen only one map that looked decent in there.

I made one long ago - my first real forged map in Reach actually. It's called Speleology, there's a link in my sig. I've been thinking of revisiting it - I liked the fundamental design (and the multiple paths aspect you mentioned was done about as well as possible in that space, IMO), but there are parts that could be better.

I was actually going to use that cave for the 2x2 Bank contest, but couldnt think of a good way to utilize the space with such a limited amount of objects to forge with.

Anyway, I like the idea of a re-arrange a map contest, that seems really interesting to me. I also like the build from idea. One idea I have that may or may not fly, is a comp where you can use every object in Forge to make a map, apart from the 'Building Blocks', 'Buildings' and 'Bridges and Platforms' menus. And depending on the degree of difficulty to be incurred, possibly no coliseum walls or windows, and it cannot use natural geometry. That would really force people to get creative when thinking about how to structure their maps.

Everyone please take the time to check out the Unofficial $5000 Budget Map-Making Contest (long-winded, I know) that I've decided to start as a result of the positive feedback seen here and a little push from Soul Slasher:

    http://www.forgehub.com/forum/halo-...g-competition-read-all-about.html#post1404624

Please read the whole OP before posting! This is not a submission thread. The contest does not begin until after the 2x2 Bank Contest is completely done and the winner has been announced. Also, it is unofficial. This means there will be no front-page announcement for the winner, but a humble prize offering is in the works.
