    Co-op?

Anyone else expecting puzzles that won't be solvable for at least 1 year?

    I am so excited.

YES!!!!! This game was one of my favorite games ever. I just hope that they make the puzzles longer and more difficult to solve. Maybe an online race mode? Who can get to the end first? A randomizing level generator that creates levels by randomizing different structures? I am hoping for the best!

I've beaten the first one a couple dozen times and I would still play it and beat it and have a fun ass time doing it. It's that amazing, seriously.

Portal 2 takes place thousands of years after the first game. The radio messages were translated into ASCII and showed pictures of the new robot characters and other things.

I can't wait for Portal 2. I mean, I've had more fun with a $15 game 2 hour or so sp only game than with some full fledged titles. So...take the arcade game, and make it a full fledged title? Full campaign, co-op, great graphics, and GLaDOS? Sign me up.

I'd like someone to explain to me what makes Portal so great. I've recently seen individuals and huge gaming sites praising the game beyond belief. I've seen sites award Portal the award of greatest game of all time. Gameinformer even named GLaDOS the best video game character of the past decade, which just blows my mind.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Portal too. I've beaten it three times and realize that it has ingenious puzzles and a truly unique sense of humor, but I feel like I'm in the minority in thinking that it isn't one of the greatest games ever made.

I think Portal has one of the greatest game mechanics of all time. Looking at games from when they first started out and when they've progressed to now, there have been very few games each generation that do something truly unique. The first video game pong was a simulation of table tennis. It was an important first step in helping people understand video games and what they could do.

With that in mind many video games are inspired by real world experiences. The CoD series was born out of war simulation games. You can find a similar experience in going to the firing range though or playing paintball. In fact paintball is a much more visceral experience. The thing that makes portal really stand out is that you absolutely can not get that experience anywhere else.

Even when you look at super hero games, that feeling of power can be had at the box office as we project ourselves onto the hero. This is why Portal is one of the greatest games of all times. It is the essence of games, a pure interactive game mechanic. One that not only interacts with the level around you, but with the other characters, and obstacles as well.

They also did a great job with the designs of the sentries, levels, story, sound, etc. That's really just the polish necessary to make the core game mechanic shine.

This is the main part I take issue with. I can definitely appreciate the uniqueness of Portal's gameplay and its brilliant integration into its levels, but I can't seem to realize the fascination with Portal's plot and characters. In my mind, you can't have an effective character (which is an integral part of any plot) without having some sort of character development; otherwise, there is no evolution of a character and nothing for the player to draw emotion from.

The plot, seems to me, is a woman who goes through a series of tests as a lab rat, and eventually achieves freedom (although the update revealed that she was dragged back into the facility). Along the way you see messages carved into walls from, presumably, another person who underwent the same tests. This all adds up to a single moment of defiance and eventual freedom. While any story can be boiled down to it's basic elements in order to appear simple, Portal's story really is just that, in my opinion. I can accept the argument that Portal has great storytelling, but the story itself is uninteresting.

Story and gameplay are equal in my enjoyment of games, so me not finding the story interesting is definitely one of the reasons I didn't appreciate Portal as much as others have.

I never played the first one but this next one looks so much fun with co-op. Probably a stupid question but will this one be the full $60 and is there an actual story to the game or no?
