    About Hydra XXIII

Hydra XXIII is a remake of the classic map Damnation from Halo: Combat Evolved. There have been a few remakes already in Reach's lifespan, but in my honest opinion, none of them brought Damnation to it's true glory as one of the best competitive maps in the Halo franchise. Some of the remakes I have seen really put this map to shame. As such, I decided to make a remake that not only fit the gameplay as perfectly as the engine will allow, but also add some flavor to the visuals. The name Hydra XXIII is a reference to the map's original description ("Covenant Hydro processing Center"), while the XXIII refers to the number of days it took me to make the map, from start to finish.

This map went through several iterations, and was made using two televisions and Xboxs so i could compare Damnation in CE with the physics and POV in Reach. It was a very frustrating experience getting everything as right as possible. The fall damage is almost identical to what it was in CE, almost all of the same jumps and tricks are possible, with only a few changes due to budget/object limit constraints. The size feels somewhat similar as well, and not cramped like many of the remakes i have been seeing.

    Differences

The is one major difference that i had to account for, which was the weapons and spawn times. 2 Snipers at 30 seconds is a bit too fast. All power weapons were changed to a 3 minute spawn time (180 sec) and a lot of the original power weapons were redacted. The original included 4 Shotguns, and in the PC version it also included 2 Flame Throwers and a fuel rod gun. I felt that was too many power weapons for Reach's gameplay, and wanted to spice up the weapon setup, while keeping faithful to the original as well. A few of the non-power weapons were changed around for a little bit of Reach-styled gameplay and to favor more medium-long range weaponry.

I also didn't want to re-create the same map as all the others. I wanted to put my own spin on it too and make it different from the others, without affecting gameplay too much. As such, the pipe room was made cave-style, as opposed to room-style, making use of the Quarry as the backdrop. I figured using the Quarry and cliffside setting would allow me to manipulate my budget better and save more wall, decorative, and Block pieces for the rest of the map. I also wanted to make use of the cleaner forge pieces, as opposed to just blocks and wall coliseums.

For reference for those who don't know Damnation, here is some images to compare with :)

I dont really know what Damnation actually looked like, because I never played CE, but the forging in this one looks smoother so I guess I'll take take it. The forging is really smooth, but like I said I never played the real thing I cant say as to accuracy.

I guess it'd help for people who haven't seen the map to look at these first, lol:

Great remake, I just downloaded this map and absolutely love the layout. I haven't played Combat evolved, so Damnation doesn't ring any bells lol, but this map is definitely for the competitive gamer. Halo generally stresses team shooting, positioning, and weapon/map control. This map has all of that and stresses good, fluid movement, like not falling off and being able to evade and shoot back without falling.

More Halo: Reach maps should include movement as a competitive aspect.

unlike the others that posted, i have play CE :)
and i just played on this map on CE with a friend a few days ago. and right after i tried this map, along with other the other damnation remakes on the bungie forum.
This map felt the best while playing rather than the others, even tho the others looked fancier.
    I applaud you

Like a couple posters above, I didn't play halo ce, or I should say I didn't do anything as it relates to multiplayer. I do have my old copy, so I can go back to look at the old maps anytime I see a remake. In this case though, it wasn't necessary. I thought this was damnation just from the first picture. Excellent job dude.

Ha, really? I'd have thought more people would have played CE that go to Forgehub. More people should, it has the best MP maps in the series, IMO :)

Anyways, thanks guys. You could always judge it as a map, as opposed to a remake :p

I plan on submitting it for matchmaking for a proposed Classic Playlist that is in the works. It is totally legit, so you know :)

Ok I'll throw in my two cents. I played CE a TON back in college when the game first came out and I loved it. Damnation was never a favorite map of mine, but I love Halo CE so much that I had fun no matter what map I was on.

All that aside this is one of the best remakes I've seen. It may not be "fancy" as some say but it is a very clean build and it's easy to recognize locations from the original and it's fun to play on. I do like the little garden area and the cave idea. I really think this map captures the feel of Damnation better than the other remakes out there. Well done.

I have played Halo CE, but I have never played Damnation (that I can remember at least). So, after playing this yesterday, I am gonna load up CE and check out the original. Of the three maps in the classic playlist I have played, this is definitely my favorite. It's also worth noting that this is the favorite of a friend of mine who has played a lot more of the maps in the playlist. If I have one complaint with the map, it is that I have noticed a few, minor spawning issues. All in all though, great job!

best reamke of the map with better aesthetics than even the original map on halo 1...the use of different blocks and objects show nice aesthetics and the weapons seem to be good...

Damnation was indeed an excellent map. Probably top three in the series, if not the best one overall. Mighty fine remake.

My only minor complaint is this not being built at the waterfall, although from the looks of things you didn't really have the budget/objects remaining to lay down the extra pieces necessary to replace that grassy floor area. Purely an aesthetic thing though, the gameplay is great.
