Superman's iconicism is far more memorable than any particular story arc he's been in. Add to the fact that he has this weakness that can kill him and no-one ever manages to do it. There's only so many times you can slip out of the clutches of your One-Archilles-Heel before it starts feeling forced and repetitive.
