hey i just have a few questions about the hauppage HD PVR

1: I live in Australia and i am wondering what stores would have this device?

2: This device does it capture and render the video? or is the computer rendering the video?

3: Is this device easy to use and if you have one can you tell me any problem you have encountered?

    1. Hauppauge Computer Works: Where to Buy
USA and Canada in stores. Check like techy stores and stuff though. Never know.

    2. The computer renders the video, This box just converts the standard Component cables into a format that the computer can read.

    3. If you read stuff, it's easy. But if you just throw in on and try to wing it, maybe not so much.

May I ask if you're using a PC or a Mac? I've got one of these and have found it really easy to use, would be glad to answer any specific questions you have about using it, but I use it with a Mac so can't speak for windows. I know quite a few people around here have them, though, if Amercan's around anymore then I'm pretty sure he uses it with Windows.

you should check to make sure it's compatible with windows 7 (I'm 99% sure it is) and in that case you won't need to buy any extra software like mac requires.

It is compatible with Windows 7
But the software and drivers shipped with it aren't...
It's also a royal pain in the **** to even get the thing set up.

Basically, the device itself is ok... It captures footage in raw .m2ts and .ts formats and you can use the software included to encode it for playback. Alternatively, you can download the free "trial" of Arcsoft Media Extreme 2, which is basically a full version... I think they've cocked up with the DL files because I have no limited functionality at all with my "Trial" nor any pop ups stating I should upgrade etc...

However, I've had numerous problems with the device.

First being, once on, you cannot restart the device/turn it off/disable the usb port. If you do, the device driver becomes corrupt and requires a reinstall and numerous machine and device restarts.

Second, any and all device drivers for this product (on windows vista/7) completely suck a fat one. They're terrible and I'm surprised a prestigious company that have such a great reputation have shipped out a product with such disastrous drivers.

Third, the IR remote control doesnt work.. at all.. This is due to driver issues. You have to install like 10 different patches and it's clearly not worth the hassle.

Fourth, sometimes the patches cause the device driver to become corrupt.. meaning you need to reinstall the base driver, and re-patch over it all again..

Fifth, my capture card has frequent input issues. If the device is too cold the device signal is distorted and disgustingly bad. This occured from the very first day, but i'd read reviews and learned that when the device is too HOT the device has issues. Mines completely the opposite though, and now I have to wrap it up in a jumper and basically sweat it into submission just so I can capture some footage.. And this doesn't always work.

Basically, get the new blackmagic intensity pro.. or the other external one. Problem is with externals is there's much more to rely on that will potentially break and mess everything up.

I haven't yet bought one. Currently trying to sort my money out to do so as my hauppauge is about to permanently kick the bucket.

As far as I'm aware, they install the same as every other PCI card. Plug them in, install the drivers, restart PC and done.
As long as you have enough PCI slots on your new rig, you should be fine.

A bit of a bump, but I honestly have no idea what stevo's talking about. He must've bought his off of Ebay or something. I have a hauppauge hd pvr now and it's running like a flippin' dream (bought from Newegg.com).

Only downside to it is that the cables are laughably short.... good thing my tv and desktop are close I guess :p
