Upon trying to complete the challege where you have to beat Nightfall without dying on legendary, I stumbled across a lever in the corner of a hard to access room:
    [IMG][IMG]

When I go up to it and press "X", the lever reacts and is triggered, so something IS happening. It is not - to my knowledge - part of a data pad finding... So does anyone know what its for.

PS: If Im the first one to have found this, I don't care if someone runs with it, and finds out what it does...
... and then takes the credit for finding it... and then getting high-fived by bungie..

Is that the lever in the building, right after the second encounter? If so, I just found that too.

Well I wasn't going to post the location, because you would certainly know where the location was if you knew about what the lever was for... but seeing as I dont care if the credit of discovering this (maybe) is taken from me: here
    [IMG]
It is right after going through the first area. On the left you will see the door you would enter from, and the room to the left is where the switch is.. There is a wall separating the two rooms so you have to push this conveniently placed table up against the wall and then jump over the wall into the left most bombed out room.....
Hope that description was vague and confusing : )

I noticed a few things about this

-You have to be on legendary for the switch to be triggered

    - There is a "hanging light' in the room which appears to be gravitationally attracted toward the lever/switch thing
    [IMG]

    YES!!! : )

The lever is facing down when you reach it correct? Because I just got there and it hasn't said anything. (Legendary)

Nobody knows what it does yet, though it has been discovered before. The first I heard of it was a few weeks ago. If you go into Theater without going into the area in person, it won't allow you in.

Now that I think of it... There may be several of these switches in the level. (4 at most)

Try activating the switch and then flying your camera and looking at "key points". (suspicious areas)

I might have hallucinated a little because it is facing down for me now when I go do it.. I have a few theorys as to what might activated:

    -4 people legendary

    -Active camo (cloak) on

    -all skulls on legendary

    Added after 3 minutes:

Ya Im thinking It might be like the 4 banshees on the package where there are the 2 switches that you have to trigger within a certain time between each other otherwise they disappear.

This switch was discovered a while back by someone on bungie.net. I believe if you shoot the light it will aim at the switch. I don't believe people have discovered what this does yet, but people do believe that it is significant because both the light and that switch disappear when the next area loads.

    Alright you know what.

    **** this lever.

I can't figure out what it does. Although the light was facing the switch before I got there. When someone hits the switch pay attention to the light, then use the direction of the light to find the second part of this if there is one. You know... Angles and stuff.

Ya right now im testing it out (I have managed to get on top of the level in almost all the areas of the level, in fact on one point i have got completely out of the map) Though I still can't figure it out.. I noticed that there are a few objects in that part of the level (where the lever is) that really stick out to me.. As for the light, sometimes it doesn't aim at the lever when i shoot it (or hit it). This leads me to believe that there is a role that the light plays in this Easter egg. maybe some sort of elaborate combination.

I wonder if there are other switches like this one on other levels that have to be activated in order or something..

Have you tried comparing what happens during cutscenes with and without the lever activated? and is the lever visible during a cutscene?
There's a chance the function of the lever was removed while the lever remained. Something like the extra (assassin) skull in Halo 3.

No it is not seen in the cutscene. Also It was very purposely placed in in the level. Bungie didnt just place the lever randomly on the map, they actually design the room to make it impossible to access except for the hole in the ceiling, they programed the light to be magnetically attracted to the lever (or a certain angle)... Bungie spend time on this one. For the halo 3 assassin skull, bungie kinda just stuck that in later.. it is almost like they build the entire game first and then placed all the skulls in hard to reach places -with exceptions of course.

But the easter eggs in Reach required time and intention. They had artists, programmers, level design people all working on these easter eggs. While I Doubt that they would make this level of an effort to create an Easter egg, and then just stop halfway, it is certainly within the realm of possibility

I love finding mysterious stuff like this in games. Also, I find this thread amusing because I'm sure everyone that has any interest in Reach will know what all he levers do and where to find them in a month or two, just like the skulls in Halo 2 and the terminals in Halo 3.

EDIT: Also, It's very possible that the switch you found activates another switch that you have to have another person activate, like with the two that spawns four banshees. Good luck finding the other switch in time, though. If it disappears after you leave the area, that probably either means that either the second switch is also in that area, or that Bungie wants this to be very well hidden.

Maybe, When you activate it and another switch, or some sort of code, then bungie gets a message and they give you 500000000 credits and a supersecretawesome helmet that noeone else gets, and the switch area is remove from the game through a patch. Just a wish that I have. So whoever figures i out first is the only one that knows its true meaning.

Someone should just read the machine code.

Maybe the switch activates similar lights in the area. Try shooting other lights after flipping the switch, see if they point somewhere.

Okay, I went to this spot on legendary with three people. I couldn't activate the switch or anything. But in the room next to where the lever is there is another lever. There is also a place on that area where there is kind of a machine/thing that looks like the lever with no lever. And as for the lights the only thing is that they hang at one angle only. Depending on where you shoot the lights depends where it goes. Perhaps there is also a place with another lever in the first encounter area. Not sure yet though.

Alright so I have concluded that the angled light is nothing more than a clue as to the lever. Because looking through the broken glass doors to the room, the light would be the only thing giving away something in that corner.

Light = Nothing more than a location hint.

Now to hopefully find a second part of this Egg to discover the true meaning of the lever.
