Hey guys this is my first post on anything remotely like forge hub (apart from posting this in the casual section, but I thought maybe it should go in this section idk :S) so forgive me if this thread is rookie. I used to make some pretty hectic maps on Halo 3 but I never got around to sharing them with anyone but my friends so I thought I would post my first Reach map somewhere, so here it is ***Feedback would be nice if its not too much trouble, whether on the map or the post I don't care but being a rookie feedback would be nice XD*** THE RAVINE: This map is rather HUGE, or at least very big, and so its more a BTB map, or 6v6 slayer map (I simply haven't put objectives in because I don't play enough objective games, so feel free to mess around with objectives if you want). The idea for this map was to have a basic fighting zone over a drop, which of course will kill you if you fall, and to have both teams fighting across this ravine. There are 3 main ways to cross the ravine, the longer route meanders across platforms and bridges but has more cover than the direct route and in most cases is out of line of site from the spawn sniper towers (which contain snipers, but only with 4 shots). This route contains 2 DMRs one for each side, 2 Grenade Launchers (one for each side), a plasma launcher (in the middle structure on the bottom floor that is next to the banshee spawn), and a sniper rifle on the 3rd floor of this middle structure. The more direct route over the canyon contains 2 needler rifles (located as you walk onto the bridge), and a rocket launcher. This bridge also has 2 shade turrets, but use at your own risk because they are very exposed. As stated before the map is quite large and so each team spawns with 4 mongooses. Each spawn contains a regular tower and a sniper nest. The sniper nests contain a sniper rifle with only 4 shots, and the tower contains a DMR. In front of the spawns a little way are some crates where another DMR can be found. I wanted to add a twist to the map and so I added an "eye in the sky" this is the floating platform that is located floating in the sky, and contains a sniper rifle that is more useful (contains 3 spare clips) and a falcon (for the team player). There are a few ways to reach this platform. Take a leap of faith, fly up there with a banshee, or use the exposed gravity lift that takes a while to get to. The easiest and fastest way to get there is to take a leap of faith, although this carries with it the inherent risk of death. The banshee method, well requires that you get a banshee. There are two leaps of faith, one from each side and they both require you launch yourself along with a mongoose off of a cliff (designated by two cones to give a rough indication of the correct place to jump). If you are flooring it and hit the correct spot you will most likely be flung through a teleporter and arrive unharmed up top. If not well you just lost a point for your team for being irrational and greedy . I don't like how the jetpack AA would sort of ruin this map so I have also provided a team slayer variant that spawns everyone with an Assault Rifle, Magnum, 2 frags, and sprint. In the centre of the map now is, not only a building where a platform once was (if you saw Ravine 1.0), but also another 2 story building that can be accessed by the grav lift on the for-mentioned 3 story building. This new building contains a needle rifle and leads onto a bridge which has a grav lift at the far end. This building on the second floor also has a grav lift that lauches the player to the roof of the building where a machine-gun turret is located, which although open to enemy fire can see a large portion of the bridge areas. The bridge is constructed so as to provide less cover the closer you are to the grav lift (and also contains a concussion rifle). Jumping into this lift will boost you up to the falcon area. This is one of the only three ways to get to this area as stated before. Below this third structure is a small bridge with glass shields, this bridge spans the chasm with a ramp leading to blue spawn and a teleporter to red spawn. The reason for the teleporter is simply because if red team had to run to the bridge around the cliff face it would be unbalanced in that blue would make it to the bridge in much shorter time. On the centre of this bridge is a shotgun and a grav lift that launches the player to the second floor of the 3 story platform building. In summary Weapon List: 6 x DMR 3 x Needle Rifle 2 x Sniper Rifle (0 spares) 1 x Sniper Rifle (2 spares) 1 x Sniper Rifle (3 spares) 2 x Grenade Launcher 1 x Concussion Rifle 1 x Rocket Launcher 1 x Plasma Launcher 1 x Machine-gun Turret Vehicle List: 8 x Mongoose 2 x Shade Turret 1 x Banshee 1 x Falcon Now for the pics Overall View of Map Main Direct Bridge Leap of Faith (Red Side) Leap of Faith (Blue Side) Blue Spawn Red Spawn Bridge section (Red spawn approach) Bridge section (Red spawn approach cont.) Looks like some parts don't have enough cover, like if your spotted your pretty much dead. nothing to hide behind. Try adding a few more structures and some cover to the bridge.
Cool thanks, I havnt had the chance to test it on a large scale but yeah I was thinking the same thing, about to put some rocks and walls and stuff in to give a bit more cover
Yeah theres not much cover, and the structures are very basic. I like the floating bridges and the basic structures. I would suggest putting some buildings/structures on some of the open parts, such as the floating platforms. I like how you made the structures based on the canon walls too. Nice job, just needs some more detail and cover.
Lol, started doing things and now i got a bit carried away, nearly out of money , anyway should have the updated map and pics up soon.
Welcome to Forge Hub! I like some of the ideas you incorporated into your map, like the suicidal dash for power! I imagine Spartans going over cliffs like lemmings. I have a few suggestions, too. For being a BTB map, it is pretty linear. Linear gameplay isn't always bad, in fact, a very popular gametype (Conquest) was created utilizing absolutely linear levels. But for BTB, there should be more options to accomodate the large number of players. There needs to be enough options for someone if option A or B is already taken. Essentially, your map has 2 choke points with the bridges. Those are your only roads to either base. One is narrow with no cover approaching it and the other is a long walk with little cover on it. Neither is really condusive to great gameplay without other options to get around. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three entry points to any area, whether it be into a room, a base, or an island. This opens up many tactical and strategic options to players and prevents camping. This is the Bungie standard, and if it works for them . . . Also, keep in mind your points of interest. Why an area is important, how it can be defended and how it can be attacked or exploited should be some questions to ask as you build your map. Sorry for being so long winded, but I wanted to provide you with some ideas to build on with either this map or future maps. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips guys... well im still building ravine 2.0 and it seems to be coming together... its bigger better and atm just generally more kickass than its predecessor. More cover, more structures, grav lifts etc etc, so ill see how it goes when im finished... i just hope i have enough money
Ok, well the changes are up, idk if it feels complete yet so i might change it still, but thats pretty much the finished product...
