I'm sorry, this might seem like a stupid question, but you guys are talking about the doors with a lot of knowledge, could you perhaps point me towards something that has the shield doors in it, or is this completely speculation?
And we could use it for finish lines, but I'm not sure if we will even have to worry about cheatable tracks seeing as we have an actual Race gametype now.
Dammit, I came up with that idea too! Well geniuses think alike. lol I already have a competitive map concept that'll have multiple levels and use a one-way lift. The thing is: I have a feeling that when you go through the one-way shield door and land on it, you might bounce off and keep boingo-boingo-ing instead of just walking on it, but we'll see.
I thought up a few interesting ideas if the One Way Door 2 is small enough, you could make a level where you spawn in a lower level run down one of two corridors and get pulled up into the battlefield. Or rather it's a part of a symetrical map where the only way back up from a level is to take a shield ride up to the higher one. I see many ways to abuse the doors. And from the forge world viodoc there was a scene where a hog jumps onto one but they cut before you see it land, it has the word FUN written above it. it goes the lenght from alaska to either the island or a high part on montana so I'd assume you CAN drive on it.
If you played the BETA and played invasion you would no there is a little "Pull" (even though i see it as more of a push since it pushes you out of the shield door when your slightly touching it so you can't be half way though.) Plus there's only four 1wayshield doors so you can really only make one and not use any other 1wayshield doors on the map. Also I think it would just be more efficient just using one 1wayshield door and either jumping or a man cannon. I believe it does do that like a platform you can't stand on EX:70* slope, so if its perfectly flat you can bounce around and control your self but if its on a slight angle you would slide down.
I was thinking something like this would have the same effect, but with less budget used. Since man cannons can be altered in terms of power you only need one, and the man cannon it's self prevents people from going back down as does the one way shield door. I don't see the point in have 3 one way doors?
The BETA had these doors in it, and I have also had this tested in the leaked version and it worked. (Check OP next time) Yeah I'm told it does bounce you but not as much as vehicles did on shield doors in halo 3. Plus ching chongs design would eliminate this anyway. Shutup kid, if you posted more than "PROOF" then I would not have had to report you. Please just read the OP next time. I had this tested in the leaked version. I've already said that man cannons will not produce the same nice smooth effect, I think it just 'feels' better than a mancannon.
Soft kill zones stack time per life. That limits the uses of the lift. Not to mention it's a little ugly.
i was thinking that this would be better as well. it uses much less budget, first of all. and i would also prefer a man cannon lift. i would rather be able to travel faster than have some "smooth" effect that doesnt really matter and really just slows you down.
i think it depends on the map and the type of budget. this also is going to be a silent version, in case you want to maintain stealth, because mancannons are loud. a bit slower might be good, like powering down a route in CTF. it could produce a cool effect too, and it isnt ideal for every map but nothing is.
Better how? Other than alerting everyone playing in the lobby to where you are? Man cannons are awkwardly fast. The speed is about as fast as the grav lift. Also, slow you down? How can a multiplier to your speed slow you down? ¬.¬ This^ It looks better aestheticly and feels better aestheticly, it works better gameplay wise. Only problem is the budget, but ohh wait... Reach has a massive budget -.-
No need to get really defensive. While I think this is a good idea, it's definitely not an end all be all. Man-cannons, while not exactly pretty or smooth, are MUCH more cost effective over this. Something like this is not nearly integral to the design and mechanics of a good map, but more over polish and nice fluff. The ONLY situation where this might be required and/or actually important is a map if you are attampeting to strive for a 'secret' tunnel of some sort without the obnoxious noise of the mancannon for all to hear. I'm not exactly sure on the mechanics of the one-way shield door, but this is how I THINK it works. There are 3 sets of them. Each have 4 available. So there are 12 shield doors available. You are required to put them atleast 1/2 of a spartan due to someone crouching (Can't use a kill-zone because as stated, it stacks and wouldn't work). Let's say you wanted to move the spartan up something roughly double the height of the Green Room jump up to the barrels in Halo 3 Guardian (In the green hallway to jump up to the explosive barrels on the wall). That would likely take 6 shield doors. Probably more, likely not less. So you can have two of those in a map. For the price of just two lifts like that, it would cost you 2400$. That's almost a quarter of the whole budget.
A situation where it would need to be used in, is pretty much any map that needs a lift which is a core part of the map. Such as if it was in the center or a main part of the map (Kinda like guardians gold or constructs gold (Yeah that's a much larger one, just think about the importance of the lift)) The momentum keeps you going, 3 would probably get you as high as the gold room lift (YES, they ARE that POWERFUL).
I meant, a situation where it is REQUIRED to be the shield door lift and not a mancannon/gravity lift. And yes, I realize that 3 could probably act like the gold room lift. But green room = gold room, so imagine double the gold room lift (in large lift situations). But still, until (if) we get an unlimited budget glitch, I won't be using this until the map is finished, and then using it if I have extra money. Otherwise, I would rather skimp out on a neat lift rather than important parts of the map.
What is that? I don't even! A situation such as the one I described ¬.¬ This lift is designed to be silent and aestheticly nice, and to work like a lift, NOT A CANNON! I don't care if you don't use it. It was for use in advancing the idea onwards from a "JUST USE A MAN CANNON LULULUL". I don't care how much it costs, it is how a lift should work. In a situation where it is the size of two gold rooms etc, then yes I agree a cannon would be the best option, and this method would be impractical. But for small lifts, this would work nicest. Please do not post again if it isn't going to advance on the idea.
I understand that you want a smooth effect, but think of it like this: Lets say A man cannon is set so it launches you 5 meters, you make the one way shield door just slightly under 5m, say 4.8meters. This means that the initial speed of the man cannon, would be slowed as you would be nearing the stage in which the Spartan is starting to fall again (just over 5 meters), meaning you would only just make it past the door, and have a smooth landing. Basically, you have to slow down at some stage, this will cause a "smooth" landing. Also note that the "pull" you described the one way doors having, could be used to assist in the last 0.1m of movement to create the smooth movement.
You can't set the power of the man cannon? ¬.¬ It's just set types I believe. & Please READ! Man canons make a loud sound which alerts everyone to your location. Do other parts of geometry do that? No, so why should a lift.
Stupid question: are there actually one way shield doors in forge? I've only seen pictures where normal shield doors are shown.
