Self-reference and awareness in films shows respect for the medium. They knew they were making a wacky movie but the key moments that involved said ostentation usually had the comic-relief in the form of the kid and his monkey. Every other scene was seriousness downplayed with great visuals and broad characterization, the latter of which is usually regarded as a fault except in movies where they need to contrast the protagonist with outlandish characters and setting, such as Running Man or Predator (coincidentally, both are Arnold Schwarzenneger movies).

Going into the film I thought I was going to hate it based solely on how low-brow it seemed, with the aforementioned boy and his primate being the key motivation for the predicted hatred that would ferment inside me. However, those two were probably my favorite characters in the film, and that is partly based on the fact that their interplay highlights the comic self-awareness seen in the rest of the film (particularly the scene where the boy is trying to watch the race on TV but is not allowed to and resorts to odd means of doing so).

    I liked it.

Ugh, I have The Usual Suspects out from Netflix but I'm too tired to watch it. And, in addition to that, I need to watch Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Pulp Fiction on my DVR.

All are great, and by our generation's knowledge, underrated movies.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I didn't hate it, just like Scott Pilgrim much more.

Yeah once I learned my parents stopped having movies delivered through Netflix I decided I'd start renting movies. I would have rented Pulp Fiction instead, but it came on TV so I just recorded that and rented The Usual Suspects, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs was recommended to me by a few friends.

OH! which reminds me, I really, really, really need to watch How to Train Your Dragon.

Minutes to midnight sucked **** imo...it was going way too mainstream...I still love LP's Hybrid Theory album for nostalgia, and the re-animation album was good for the most part, meteora was meh.....

no joke this single makes them sound totally different from anything I've ever heard from them...

I wouldn't say Pulp Fiction is underrated in our generation, but the other two definitely, especially Usual Suspects which was amazing, especially the ending.

I haven't seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs yet though, loved the book as a child.
