With the recent discussions in the PPC of different various movies, I found it helpful to know that a certain movie was worth watching, so I rented the movie, and in return I liked it, hopefully more people will benefit out of this thread.

This thread will be for the sole discussion of all movies.

Feel free to discuss any movies that are coming out in theaters or on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The posting of trailers is encouraged for movies that are coming out in theaters. Also, consider suggesting movies that are already out that you have seen and liked, and explain why if you wish to do so. On the other hand, if you watched a movie that was just not worth watching, because it was really bad, feel free to tell us the movie and why it just wasn't all that great.

I liked The Other Guys, just got back from watching it. Leaves you with a "I'm doing good but being a badass while doing it" mood. Ferrell's hilarious, and I expected more comedy from Damon Wayans and Rob Riggle, but i guess they WERE costars. The story was ok, but the genius is in the comedy. there weren't any bad jokes, but when good jokes felt forced at certain points in the movie, i felt a little led on, and it detracted from some points in the movie, but it wasn't too distracting.

Eva Mendez gave me a boner right in the middle of the theatre.

    B, maybe B+

I'm going to see that tomorrow, glad to know it's good.

    Social Network Trailer:

    YouTube - ‪Watch THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trailer‬‎

See, I'm split on this movie. I've heard people aren't too interested in this movie, because they've already heard or read about the story of how Facebook got started. I, on the other hand, don't know the story and I'm fairly interested. However, I absolutely hate, and I mean HATE the person playing the main character. I can't take him seriously, and he sounds like he is either acting poorly or just a tool. I'll end up seeing it, most likely.

I give it a B-, for it's got a decent storyline. But it's one of those movies that dose a flashback to answer all the questions you may have. I don't really like that, but the movie was 'meh' overall.

I watched Toy Story 3 yesterday. Usually the third film is the film where everything gets retarded, and they go out with a bang, of sorts.
    Not this.
This film is just not what I expected at all. Even though I'd seen the trailer etc. We went into the cinema, and there were no kids in there, Like, at all. All people our age, and adults.
The film itself just... If I was a kid, I don't know if I'd even like it that much. Is it possible for it to be too adult to be a kid's film? It's got a **** ton of inside jokes and references that the kids will miss completely, and the story is well-played too. Supposedly the only voice that isn't the original voice is Slinky, because the actor for his voice died. But the new guy doesn't sound any different, so the fact that the third in the trilogy has been released 11 years after the second, and fifteen years after the first, means nothing. It could have been released one year after the second film, for all I knew. The story isn't derailed by new characters, it isn't a kid's film, and it's not ****.
Also, it's got the gimmicky 3D version, which we watched, but it's not necessary, as usual. It doesn't really add anything to the film, but that's how 3D is now. It's almost a standard.
Anyway, definitely recommend it. It's much better than you think it is, and one thousand times better than this review of it.

    Saw Sorcerer's Apprentice..... C-.

Gaps in the story, I assume that the movie takes place over a long period of time, due to the apprentice surpassing the teacher, in 2-3 days. That is bullshit. Although the acting was good, the story blew.

Well I gotta say I have to respectfully disagree w/ you. The jokes that were good were ALL in thhe trailers. I give it a C- at best. Idk if it was the ex in front of me, the douchbags behind, or the couple beside me that wouldn't stop laughing but I didn't think it was that great personally.

Just watched American History X. I'd been meaning to watch this movie for a while now, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. Edward Norton, one of my favorite actors, plays an extreme white supremacist, and the story follows the events that led to his beliefs and the effects they've had on his family.

I consider this movie, while not phenomenal, a must watch, just for the fact that it deals with subjects that you rarely see addressed in other movies. It was actually frightening that, at times, Norton's character was so convincing and charismatic that it was hard to disagree with some of his extremely racist arguments. This just speaks to the great writing that's implemented into this film. And, to top things off, this movie contains one of the greatest WTF/messed up scenes I've ever witnessed.

If it weren't for the predictable ending, this would be one of my top movies.

    ---
Gran Torino was the movie tonight. I'd meant to see this movie in theaters, but it somehow passed me by, and by the time I wanted to see it everyone else already had.

A lot of people told me how great the movie was, and how the racism really made the movie it's own. Considering that, it probably didn't serve it any justice by watching it the night after American History X, the most racist movie I've ever seen. It just sort of made it seem too tame, and like they could have gone much deeper to really set this movie apart. Either way, it was still a good movie, but not a great movie.

My major complaint was that I didn't think the actor portraying Tao did a particularly good job, especially near the end where he should have been expressing a lot of emotions, but instead just got louder. He wasn't a particularly likable character either, as he was exactly what Eastwood made fun of him for; a wimpy, quiet, and sort of annoying kid. I did like the end, just because it wasn't quite what I expected.

The writing and dialogue was funny, and not even due to racist vulgarity, but through some clever quips and one-liners. Overall, I just thought Gran Torino managed to drag along and barely manage to keep my interest up until a stronger finale. And, even with the cheesy drive off into the sunset in the final moments, I'm happy with how the movie ended. Quick side-note, Gran Torino might have been the quietest movie I've ever watched. I play almost all my games and movies at around 20 volume on my TV, and even then certain sequences or events can be a little too loud; however, I had to turn my TV up in the 50's just to understand what was being said.

Movies that I've seen within the past two weeks:

    Kickass

I saw this movie the day it came in stock at my local redbox, which I believe was two weeks ago. So I can't fully remember the entire movie. I wasn't expecting much out of it, I never saw it in theaters because I simply thought I wouldn't like it... So I rented it. So for not expecting much out of it, I was actually quite pleased. It had some really well done action scenes, some neat stuff, some hot babes, and I liked the style of the movie, along with narrations by the main character. If I had to recommend a newer movie for you to watch on dvd and bluray I would suggest you watch Kickass.

    I give Kickass a

    B+

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Seriously why did I waste 2 hours of my time watching this movie? My little brother picked this movie out from the redbox, and I was bored, and just got done watching Kickass, so I figured I might as well watch this too. Big mistake. This movie sucked from the beginning till the end. Way too predictable and definitely aimed towards little kids, because the storyline was just too....geared towards kids, because face it, they don't know what's truly good and what's truly terrible...because in my own opinion this movie was truly terrible.

    Take a pass on it.

    Inception

Greatest movie of all time. Hands down. If I had to pick my all time three favorite movies I'd say Inception, Toy Story 3, and The Dark Knight, in that order. If you haven't seen Inception yet in theaters, go see it now! It just simply amazed me throughout the entirety of the movie, kept me thinking, puzzled, and overall just kept me on feet the entire movie. The only thing I'd have to say is that you should watch it when you're wide awake and can put all your focus towards the movie for it's entire run time of 148 minutes. I especially love the ending due to the fact that even today it's still got me curious to exactly what happened. I personally want to go see it at least one more time before it leaves the theater.

I definitely recommend the movie Inception!

    The Expendables

Well, I was expecting this to be like the best movie of the year. It was probably the most hyped movie of the year, I can say that, but I seriously don't think I can say it was the best movie of the year so far, because Inception was. Of course the all star action cast made it a must see, but if it weren't for the epic cast in this movie in no way would I watch it over and over. It was good, but not amazing or anything. It was definitely action packed, the storyline was kind of bland and cheesy, it's your typical good guys go kill the bad guys action movie, but with better than average special effects and such. The Expendables overall was good, but not great in my opinion.

    I'll give The Expendables

I only watched Kick-Ass and Inception from the movies you reviewed. I also agree with your score for the two.

Toy Story 3, in my personal opinion, was still great, but I like Toy Story 2 much more since I feel that the third part was just too secluded to a couple of areas.

I'm gonna watch The Expendables next week, so I hope it's worth it...

    Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought that it looked completely random and nonsensical. Fast-forward to last night, and I was still pretty skeptical when I walked into that theatre. However, what I got was a fun, very fast paced ride through a very unique movie that had awesome action scenes, clever and funny dialogue, and some great effects.

I'd say the movie was just the right length. If it had gone on any longer, it would have gotten boring, but it still managed to have a very satisfying ending. Michael Cera did a great job as Scott, as he did what most great comic book/superhero movies should do; he was able to play a weak, shy guy that transformed into this bad guy defeating badass believably by the end of the movie.

The story was pretty straightforward, but it was just the movie's ability to keep you interested and invested in what was happening that made it great.

i thought the thing that scott pilgrim work so well as a movie was scott pilgrim himself. he was all sensitive and crap like a ton of other main male characters, especially ones played by cera, but you werent forced to like him right away cause he was actually kind of a huge tool. he was shallow and shamelessly milked his apparent helplessness to try to get the girl. and ramona was the kind of person that could evaluate him pretty much right away, so all the fighting of her exs was less about proving himself to ramona and more about getting a good "get over yourself" ass kicking. and it worked really well. with that, all the awesome visuals, and sort of a metaphorical commentary on the relationships of modern young people, id say it was one of the best films of the year.

Haven't seen that many films recently. Been dying to see Inception!

Toy Story 3 - I've been to see this twice now, that's how much I loved it. The experience of going to see it first time was just incredible, filled with a ridiculous amount of nostalgia. Even while waiting for the film to start they were playing all of the great disney songs, "Kiss the girl", "Circle of Life", "The Bare Necessities", you name it. Me and my pals were singing along to them under our breath, as there were a few older lads behind us. But I swear I saw one of them singing along too when I turned around! The cinema was packed and filled with a wide range of ages, just as I expected it to be. A few young ones infront of us were mucking about and generally restless, not paying much attention to the music in the background which was what filled my childhood. Looking around though, I could see lots of teenagers around my age and various older people (presumably parents of the Disney-era children), and you could tell they were excited. This film clearly meant so much more to the people who'd grown up with Toy Story and the other classics. Moving on, the animation short "Night and Day" which came on before the film was very entertaining and jaw-dropping in numerous places. It really showed how far Pixar has come since it's first CG film (coincidentally Toy Story) and got me looking forward to TS3 even more. The film started and finished with those instantly recognisable clouds against the pure blue sky backdrop from Andy's room which I thought was a lovely touch. I'm not going to ruin the plot, but TS3 has a very good storyline (which is as it should be considering the amount of drafts they went through!). There are plenty of laughs to be had and enough bits of suspense to make the older guys in the audience lose a few more hairs! When we walked out of the cinema we were grinning like mad, and not one of us could think of a single thing we didn't like about the film. The thing which I find most endearing about the Toy Story franchise is how you become so attached to the characters despite them being just plastic toys, and I have to admit that I was one of those people who would have cried at the end had I not been surrounded by my peers! All in all, this is a very fitting finale to one of my most favourite series of all time. It doesn't leave you wanting more as some films do, but makes you feel like it has reached a happy ending and that there's no need for a sequel. Not to see what other adventures the toys get up to, and not for you to relive more of your childhood. I've read many comments on trailers for TS3 saying how people grew up with Andy, and that they were also about to go off to college/university. Nothing could be closer to the truth with this film, one last adventure and at the end you're ready to move on. Pixar really have really worked wonders with this one and I would definately recommend to anyone to go see it.

    A+

    Prince of Persia
    - I also saw Prince of Persia a few weeks ago, and obviously I couldn't be as impressed with it as I was with Toy Story! That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it though. It was a real fun adventure/action film filled with interesting characters and an amazing setting. The story was a bit "meh", shall we say, but it wasn't terrible like other video-game spin-offs. It was basic, and lacked complexity, but it was still entertaining. The special effects were pretty good on the most part, but some bits looked a bit outdated. Overall, it was a good film but it's one of these films where you have to see it at the cinema for the big screen experience, Popcorn + everything! I couldn't see myself buying it and watching it at home.

I disagree and agree with certain aspects of what you said. The description pretty much what I'd say too but I'd put it at a -B or C+ at best.

The action in the movie was nothing new, nothing too innovative. Rourke's character felt overacted and sort of unnecessary. The banter was my favourite part of the movie, especially with Sly and Arnie. Couture seemed pointless in this movie, his role should have been played by Willis and Church have been played by another some popular cameo. Standout performance is Statham, solid performance and no bad scenes. Best bit is the shotgun.

C Typical action movie, yet it's missing the quintessential memorable fight scene. If you're a fan of the actors and the genre, check it out.

Even though I originally said B, I can still say that a C is a reasonable rating for the movie, like I said Linu, it wasn't great or anything, nothing mind blowing, overall it was just a decent movie, definitely could of been much better if put better emphasis into it.

Edit: Also, I went downtown(Downtown Chicago) today and went to Navy Pier, and it just so happens that they had Inception playing in Imax. So I saw it for my second time, yet in Imax, still the greatest movie I've ever seen hands down, even better in Imax.

i saw the midnight showing last friday, i had no doubts going in and left VERY satisfied. everything you said was pretty right on

the cast. every supporting cast member was AWESOME, every single character had a moment to shine at one point, Wallace was feckin hilarious.

totally agreed. it basically took what Kick-Ass(another favorite from this year) dipped its feet into and put it into overdrive with some serious originality.

it's sad that it came out 5th at the box office for it's opening weekend :/ i'm hoping it'll slowly rake in people through word of mouth. it got great reviews, while the expendables and eat pray love are on top with terrible reviews. I'm seeing it again for sure, i know that much. SEE IT.

it's completely rewatchable, caused me to buy the comics, grab the soundtrack, and get the game. ALL rare for me.

This thread needs a bit of a reviving.

Anyway, I saw Salt a few days ago, so here's my thoughts:

Salt - The film is packed with action pretty much the whole way through. There are very few moments where there's actually a bit of plot development through people talking rather than trying to kill each other, but fret not, they're fairly sparse. It might sound like I'm bashing the plot, and whilst it may be pretty simple it does keep you guessing the whole way as to where Salt's loyalties actually lie. More importantly, Angelina's looking mighty fine the whole way through, even with the transition from dark to blonde to dark again and to be fair does deliver a solid preformance. Overall, go for the explosions, the chase scenes, Angelina Jolie, and a few twists and turns, but don't exect your mind to be blown.
