Well why can't there be spartan vs spartan and spartan vs elite variants?

Generator Defence is an Spartan vs Elite gametype. Spartans defend and Elites attack. The player with the rockets destoys the generator therefore must be an Elite.

Generator defense will only be used as a network testing game, and won't ship with the final game.

you missed out the key word 'MIGHT'. It was originally created as a network test, but if it gains enough popularity it could still ship with the final game.. I mean why not, when they have already gone through the effort of making it.

That's exactly what I said about that Chess game type April Fool's Joke. If they've already thought up the concept of Chess, and actually designed it. Then why can't it at least ship with the final game?

The thing with chess is i dont think they actually made a working gametype, they just did a few tricks on forge that made it look real.
PLUS bungie are saying they might ship the generator gametype.

Depending on how fun it is, I can give or take Generator Defense. It would be another gametype for the variety though.

I have a good map write-up/organization/rundown thingy I did at GoO that you can take and use or make your own if ya want. It should save you some time. I'll likely supplement that little spiel later today when the BWU is posted. Check it out:

    POWERHOUSE
Out of the 4 maps we're told about in the IGN article, we definitely get the best look at Powerhouse. It's a medium-large map suited for 4v4 and supposedly plays Slayer really well. We've also seen KotH played on it in last month's multiplayer trailer. We've already seen the gorgeous water shots and clips in the past weekly updates. Needless to say Im sure we are all excited to add a little red tint to that waterway come May 3rd. Powerhouse looks to be a fantastic asymmetric map that can probably play well for multiple gametypes.

    Swordbase
What if Prisoner and Boarding Action made teh seksy timez? Result: Gorgeous small-mid sized map based on two opposing sides chopped full of narrow interconnecting paths and sneaky routes. Its been speculated that the name could have something to do with longsword ships. However, its more likely that Swordbase is just the sister compound to the infamous military installation Castlebase seen in The Fall of Reach, which stood on top of the ancient forerunner structure deep within Menachite Mountain. Gameplay features both vertical and horizontal loops sure to keep games fast-paced and exciting.

    Overlook
While most multiplayer maps for Reach were later plugged into segments of the campaign, Overlook is quite the opposite. This is a purely campaign-based space that has been pulled out specifically to put a high stress on the matchmaking network systems. It will play the test gametype 'Generator Defense', or Network Test 1, which may or may not ultimately make it into the shipped game come fall. This interesting map seems to have taken a page out of Halo 3, and has a similar concept to High Ground in some regards. Uphill with lots of natural cover and a base at the top. Unfortunately we don't have too much to go on with this one. Only one shot that gives us an idea of the layout, and one tight interior shot.

Fortunately, though, the one outside shot is fantastic
    [IMG]

Interior. Cramped and snake-like. Should offer some good variety in playstyles for this map

    Boneyard
Boneyard is large, appears to be asymmetric, and seems to be where UNSC ships come to 'die'. It's been specifically designed to support the much anticipated gametype Invasion. Unfortunately, we only have 2 concept art images right now. However, Geoff Kieghley and GTTV are doing a special on Boneyard, Invasion, and other details that will air next Friday evening for our viewing pleasure. The hype machine rolls on!

I'm confident that it will ship. Once it hits the beta and picks up steam, cause it will, they won't be able to pull it back. The Bungie guys have gone on record saying that all of them really like it, which says a lot, and Shishka himself has spoken up about how he wants it (or something like it) to ship in the final game.

I still don't know why it has to be this gametype and how does it help them other than a simple game of Team Slayer

And search and destroy is based off of a counter strike gametype.

Obviously the way they've coded the objectives is stressful on the networking system. Moreso than a standard gametype, or else it would be a standard gametype. They've probably made a bunch of under the hood changes that don't effect actual gameplay, but effect the networking. Maybe the generator status is constantly updated, sending packets like crazy and that's how it strains the networking conditions.

The main page could use an update, most of the information has been outdated by the previous update bungie posted.

I hope Generator defence ships with the full game. It looks purty. I mean, if they bothered to make it, why wouldn't they ship it?

And yes, once you're done with your project, an update will be good for the main page.

Perhaps they have plans for a super-secret alternative version of Generator Defense that they are using this as a test for. They need the extra data to determine whether to use GD or the other version of it in the retail game.

Obviously a very "out there" theory, but its my theory nonetheless.
