So I just read all of the new 201 about a day ago and tried to make a map. Now I just don't want to try anymore. Every time I start designing a map, nothing seems good enough and all of the information is overwhelming in my head. I ask you, how do you get started on making a map without over-thinking everything?
Well usually, for me, I don't try to design anything. That doesn't mean I just start making maps however.. Most of the time, a map idea will just come to me, and I'll write it down, or something like that. Then, wherever I am, I can make preperations to design it. Try and let it come naturally to you.
That's the problem isn't it? I'll tell you how I've always gotten started and hopefully you make something soon enough 1) Come up with a hook. Amount of players, what it will play, what makes it unique, style of gameplay you want, etc. 2) Decide on most basic flow and lines of sight. I've normally used an overhead sketch, and use basic shapes to represent a major area or base (like a big square). Then I decide how they're going to be connected through major flow routes, and what advantages/disadvantages they might have in relation to each other. My original sketch for Requiem, lol 3) And then you really just build off of that....or at least that's what I've done for all of my maps. I'm sure other people have different ways they do it, though.
Thanks, guys. I'll go try when I'm feeling productive. EDIT: YES! I just got my basic thoughts down and they are SWEEEET!
