You can use Surf to cross the water in your town. You still need waterfall to get any further.

Well, to get to the indigo plateau but to get to the main land of Kanto you have to beat the elite four and then take the S.S. Fast Ship in Olivine to Vermilion then you can beat the 8 Kanto gym leaders, but make sure you got the radio upgrade from the person on 2F the Johto radio tower in Goldenrod. Then you can play the Pokeflute from the radio to wake up snorlax blocking the Diglett cave so you can get to Pewter and pretty much the left half.

That might be more than you needed.

The train can take you from Johto to Kanto, and vise versa, but I don't know how to get the train pass.

you get the train pass from copycat girl in saffron. go get her pokedoll back from the pokemon fanclub in vermillion. although its quicker to just fly to indigo plateau. you can anywhere, johto and kanto from there.

Yes, it does. I remember the copycat and there's some guy that has a pokedoll in Vermillion in the fan club. Not sure if that's him though.

About the S.S. Fast Ship; it only leaves on certain days so what I did, w/o the train pass, is fly to indigo plateau then it let me fly anywhere.

7th gym is in the seafoam islands. if you mean kanto. mahogany town in johto
entei and raikou roam johto, latios/latias roam kanto.
and its much faster to fly to indigo than ride the train.

Once you get to Mahogany Town heal your pokemon (if needed) and just head north. Eventually you will come to the lake of rage. I'm pretty sure you have to either catch or defeat the red gyrados in the lake and then a man named Lance will talk to you.
I don't think the orange islands are available for travel in these games.

Once in Mahogany Town, just go straight up.
If you don't have much money, I suggest taking the road to the left, the one on the right Team Rocket makes you pay.

    ALSO!!

Once you beat/catch Red Gyarados, go back to Mr.Pokemon (The weird guy who gave you the Egg to take to Prof. Elm), and he'll give you an EXP. Share.
