You could start off by having a look at other forger made maps and take a few of the ideas. you can then expand on these to make them your own ideas. this way you know that its going to work. also make sure not to over complicate your map. a few really good ideas are a lot more interesting than loads of average ideas that weve all see before. you will find that it makes the map more enjoyable to play as people seem to congregate at the popular ideas.
so basically take a look around until you find some inspiration of your own, even if it is remaking old maps or recreating movie sets.

I wouldn't rely on getting into Forge Academy to help you, particularly if you can't even be bothered to read the sticky that explains it.

I use inspiration from real life and other games, personally. It really depends on how creative you can be.

Look around the forum a bit. Check out some featured maps and other maps as well. Look at them in forge mode. That's how I am able to learn a lot from what other members do. What genre do you like? That has a lot to do with what you are going to forge.

    You're thinking of Google Sketchup.
Download that and look up some tutorials.

I make minigames. Sometimes I just have the most random of ideas that I think are interesting, and if they work well enough when I test them, I'll make the game. Other times I mess around with interesting traits in gametypes or lesser-known characteristics of certain objects (ever heard of Blast Off?) until I come up with an idea for a game that utilizes those traits.

Before you use sketchup, you'll want to doodle out the general shape you want to have the map take. If you want things to be multidimensional sketch out areas you want to be included.

Once you have your sketch done, you want to use sketchup to help get an accurate piece count.

You need to download one of the many sketchup templates for sandbox/foundry items. Once you get this template, you can access the sandbox/foundry items by going to Window>Components (make sure it's open if it's not) then in the components window click the home button. Place objects from there, and use the move and rotate tools to position pieces.

Here is a link to the sketchup template that has basically every foundry or sandbox item there is: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Check other people's maps and think about the elements that make them fun. Don't copy and don't steal other people's ideas but just take a few hints.

I usually can't think of anything if I just sit there and try to think of ideas. They tend to come to me when I'm doing something else, or I'll think of a structure and then start forging around it.

Sometimes if I am interested in inventing a new game, I will actually look through the game options. Sometimes I will see an option and I can turn one option into a whole game. I hope Reach has a lot more custom game options becasue I am running out of ideas, lol.
