My family bought a 70" Samsung DLP HDTV last year at Christmas. In July it died on us. If any of you guys know of an HDTV thats 50"+ that's excellent for gaming, please post.
I do applaud your family for buying DLP, so long as it was LCD, since that offsets the size with major energy efficiency improvements. However, it is still horrendously large, and perhaps a little self-indulgent. With my personal feelings aside, if you are going to buy such a large TV you should be doing your research in advance. Buying an unproven brand in order to save money and get a larger screen, for example, would be a bad idea. However, you should definitely still be under warranty. If you bought a quality brand, then that really is shocking that it failed so early. You need to prioritise screen refresh rate for gaming, first of all. Second, a TV whose control panel you can easily access so you can balance the colour to a more realistic setting - boxed products are generally set to over emphasise warm tones, largely to satisfy shop floor and what the average customer believes to be a 'good picture'. Third, it should support 1080p. Fourth, you need to consider how far away from the screen you are comfortable playing games. The larger the screen, the further away you should be sitting. For example, with a 50" screen you should be around 6 feet away. See the link below for more info on viewing distances. Good luck. How Far Should I Sit From My HDTV?
If I was the one buying the TV, I would have done my research. Also, we got a full refund on the TV, it couldn't be fixed due to Samsung lacking needed parts. Currently, my Dad is thinking of purchasing a Sony Bravia.
Can't really go wrong with a bravia. I'm pretty sure that I'm getting a samsung for crimbo, but I'm 100% that it's nothing compared to most bravias i've seen. Also, that's gonna be quite a lot. You got blu-ray and shiz as well?
Samsung is a fantastic middle ground when it comes to TV's, probably one of most worth-while in terms of quality, options and price. I'd love a Bravia though.. definately going out of my Student Loan.
I also plan on getting a new tv this Christmas with the money I get, nothing this size though. Sorry I can't help you out, but the posts in this thread helped me quite a bit.
The posts certainly helped me out, but I don't think that I'll be seeing a nice Bravia anytime soon. Last time I knew, my parents were going for 2 of the cheaper models.
I'd try and persuade them out of it. The quality and customer services will be extremely poor. I'd rather get a smaller Samsung or Panasonic than a larger tv by an unknown company. Trust that you are getting the value you are paying for.
I meant 2 of the cheaper Bravias. They were going to get a couple at Walmart for ~$1100 each or somethin like that. However, they sold out after Viernes Negro.
