Gunnar Optiks Digital Performance Eyewear Review

I received a pair of promotional Gunnar Optiks gaming glasses no more than three weeks ago and I can’t imagine how I played without them before. The specific pair that I had gotten in the mail was an attractive snow color, with amber lenses titled Bit Surfer (Found here). And man was I glad the $139.00 price tag didn’t apply to me, though with the quality eyewear I held then, I’d no doubt be willing to pay that price.

The glasses first appeal had been when I opened the sleek, soft case. An exquisite white frame showed itself, as well as the golden-brown tint of the lenses. I didn’t want to take it out of the box, effectively destroying the beauty. But unfortunately science has not yet invented a way to wear glasses without first removing them from the package, so I had to. As I placed them on my face, the room dimmed, making it easier on the eyes, and magnifying everything just slightly, including my computer and T.V.

Next, I started playing. I put them on, turned on the Xbox, popped in Halo 3, and immediately joined in with some hardcore friends of mine in the MLG playlist. During the game I was much more aware, as was my reaction time. It seemed like everything else in the game had slowed down. Though possibly the Placebo effect, and the fact that time slowing technology is non-existent, I must be imagining. But the confidence it gave me was enough to make up for that.

They're also pretty light for glasses, as well as convenient and cool looking. I mean, who wants to where glasses that make you look nerdy when you could have these? Also, I do like the mousepad that was included in the package. But one thing I found unfortunate was that the glasses get smudged often, though this might be a problem with glasses in general. I've overcome this by cleaning them with the soft cloth that was included in my Nintendo DS a few years back, and it worked perfect. I'd wish they'd include one with the optics for those who don't have their own like me.

Overall, through their some crazy mystical ability to make me better, (trust me, that's hard) Gunnar Optiks succeed in relieving strain on the eyes, allowing users to extend the periods in which they're in front of the monitor, as well as improve gamers skills and longevity. I highly recommend any Gunnar Optiks product for any and all people exposed to a monitor or television for extended periods of time as well as avid or competitive gamers, be it Halo or not. They're extremely helpful.

$139.00 is a lot to pay if you're not playing for money. I don't think they're worth it to Non-MLG gamers. And by Non-MLG, I mean people who don't play professionally.

i think its worth it, as long as you have the money to pay for them, and you actually plan to use them, and not just stare at them for hours on end.

They also sell down to $60. He just got one of the most expensive ones.

Actually, I think the difference is more for anyone who is on any kind of screen (TV, computer, laptop, xbox, whatever) for more than 2, 3 hours a day. The Gunnars really lower your eyestrain, and at least $60 is totally worth the long-term effects you'll get from easing that eyestrain. Personally, I'm getting a pair of prescriptions, just waiting for them to come in :)

Eyestrain is only caused by the lack of blinking brought on by watching TV and computer screens. Thus, no long term effects. I don't think it's worth it to buy something that will help with something that can be helped by just resting your eyes for a minute.

Um...no? Harsh colors off screens (particularly blues, which is the reason for the subtle amber tint) give your eyes strain and are why your eyes get slow and dry, along with giving you headaches and such if your on for a long time. I'm sure blinking has to do with it, a little, but that's not the major cause of what we're dealing with. In that case Gunnars wouldn't help, but I'm 100% sure that they do significantly...so that's not really the case.

But that doesn't mean it can't be cured by a little eye rest. What I'm getting at here is that unless you've got a lot money to spend or are a professional gamer, it'd be stupid to buy these.

Obviously it's geared at people who are on computers, as I said, for 2, 3, more hours. I'm looking at screens practically half the day, between school, home, and watching TV. Theoretically, could I just take a an hour break every hour? Yeah...you'd still get a little gain out of them, but not a ton....but you know, I don't. I use screens A LOT, and not having the eyestrain is a godsend.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but, I'm hoping what my friends say is true. On weekends I can do 3 hours easily, and once I get off I have a minor headache and typically need to eat or go to sleep just to take my mind off of the strain.

Having these, I would hope, will make a difference.
Plus they look pretty sweet :D

I think they've always been $60? Could be wrong about that. Regardless, those are the kinds I'm getting in prescription, can't wait :D

When they first came out I believe they were around the 80 mark, could be mistaken though.
Grats on the purchase! Perfect BR to come soon.

I'm thinking about getting the PPKs instead...any ideas? Really tempted to the Legends but I don't think I can pull off the aviator look.

Very very excited to receive my prescriptions, they say it'll be here before the 10th in time for MW2!

...explain your thoughts. I can say with 100% certainty that if you're on the computer/TV more than 2 hours a day, it's not a "waste of money".

Those ARE really nice, actually I think Neighbor wore them to MLG Dallas over the MLG Legend pair, and I know that Soulja Boy wears that pair as well. If I had the money, I'd totally buy them :p For now, it's the PPK pair with prescriptions for me!
