I just saw the Sgt. Johnson Commercial, and I noticed that a Brute has a Red Plasma Rifle, which weren't in Halo 3. Theres a pic Not a big find, but y`know just noticed it.
its a brute plasma rifle from halo 2. since halo3:ODST is set just after the new mombassa slipspace event (after you kill the scarab in halo 2) bungie probaly thought it was fiiting to have them. There similar to the elite one but their more powerful and overheat quicker.
Not sure why they weren't in Halo 3 but I can confirm, after playing Firefight for 10 minutes, that the red "brute" plasma rifle is in the game. I personally didn't like the weapon in any of the games. It over heats too quickly.

Source So basically, the spiker would have been in Halo 2, had the dev team had more time.
The brute plasma rifle is just a plasma rifle with a different skin and a faster fire rate. (and it overheats quicker)
Not really dude it's alot more powerful (then again those were Halo 2 results.) There wouldn't really be any purpose of having it if it was just weaker and had has a different skin.
If it's faster, then it doesn't mean it's more powerful. It just means it can deal the same amount of damage faster. I'm not even sure if it's faster or stronger, but I've always prefered them rather than the blue version. Oh, and it looks better than elite's PR imo
BPR was not put into H3 because it was unneeded due to new weapons, and would have been too powerful. With the original plasma rifle, you can kill a person in 2-3 shots and a melee, which takes under 2 seconds. With a BPR you could fire those 2-3 shots in the time the original fires 1-2 shots, meaning you could pretty much kill someone in a melee.
That and duel wielding 2 red ones is alot stronger than the elite version. I know right now in h3 the dual plasma rifles are freaking strong. So i can only imagine 2 brute plasmas. Or the old smg plasma rifle combo
This is also (IMO) why they made the spiker... to give the brute's their own style of weapon and of course the turn out was a weaker BPR. It suits well for Halo 3 though. If the BPR was in halo 3 then it would be on par with the shotty, sword, and grav. hammer... maybe even stronger.
